It has begun

I have found that every incubator will behave a bit differently with humidity. Those with insufficient ventilation will get nasty fast with excessive humidity; those with excellent airflow and air exchange can get by with higher humidity without smelling like a bacteria laden wet sock. I've found that 45% is a good humidity in my GQF cabinet for incubation, and 65%-70% for hatching chickens and turkeys in both the GQF and in my Eco 20.

Staggered hatches without good ventilation and with water wells under the hatching platform are exceptionally risky as the hatching debris will fall into and contaminate the water wells, raising the potential for navel infections after hatch.

Excessive humidity in the incubator also produces stress in the lungs of the just hatched chicks.

Too low a humidity makes it hard for the chicks to break free.

The best thing you can do is to log every hatch and learn from it.

Wow! Mine is at 45% now on day 5. @bertS where is your humidity at now? What do you plan on raising it to during lockdown? I was planning to shoot for 75% at lockdown but I'll adjust until then depending on air cell. so is my first hatch ever but I've read on here lower humidity in the beginning is good.
I'm mid 40's right now. all vent plugs out.

I'll up it at lockdown. put one or both plugs back in.

I have a styro bator.

My suggestion is leave the plugs out.  But you'll have to figure out what works best for you.

I am planning on leaving the plugs out but I have 3 baby food jars that I'm going to put water in and put sponges in them to increase water area. I'll place them Inn the corners near the vent holes so I can add water as needed. Might get some fish tank tubing and put those in so I can add water better that way. Do you think I would need to add vent holes if I plug 3 little ones with tubing? I also have a Styrofoam incubator.

Can you just insert the tubing when you need to add water, then pull it back out? I linked some bendy straws together, and squirted water through them, and removed the straws.

That's a good idea. Then I wouldn't have to worry about venting. Only concern would be getting the straw in the right spot. Wonder if that would be hard. Hmmm

Hook together some straight ones with a bendy one on the end, to aim at the cup. It takes some practice and positioning of your receptacles, (and making a few strange faces while doing it doesn't hurt either! haha) but I bet you can figure it out.

good ol' WV......more than just a pretty face......

oh so many things I could say, but I will just say thank you...
