It was supposed to go well.

It's All Connected
5 Years
I put the 5 week old chicks in the gazebo for their first outing today, and BAM! before I could react Princess Mica (otherwise known as Stone Cold Killer snaked one out of the wire. I mean I was right there.

It was Carl, and yes, he was a Roo. My only saving grace with Trena is he would have been culled for dinner eventually anyway. She is soooo mad at me. I feel awful.

Mica broke his neck almost instantly, so I know he didn't suffer, but geez that was bad.

Lesson learned the hard way: predators are everywhere! Even in your garage, lying in wait.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My roo got killed by a dog while I was home. I know you cant replace him, but if you decide that you can love another roo there are many people have young roosters for sale that need good homes.

Thank you. I have a feeling we will still have more than one.

*assorted bantams I am learning, means Roo* but he was a really cool bird.

Holy crap, you didn't think something you call Stone Cold Killer might be dangerous to 5 week old babies??

We didn't call her that until this happened. It won't happen again.
hi tntchix!

You're not the first this has happened to this year.
hugs.gif
Several have had dog attacks on chicks.

We live and learn. Make sure you have a hasp and lock on that chick enclosure as the predators can get creative if
they want in.

Hardware cloth is a real friend if you have predators. SCK was just doing what cats
do, not his fault. I'm presuming you have chicken wire around the outside run. I roof mine with chicken
wire too. Fully enclosed is my motto.

However...doncha just sigh when someone writes "however"?... still,
if you have predators you might want to run hardware cloth around the run as high as chcikens standing on
the ground can poke ther heads thru the chicken wire. One of raccoons fav tricks is to get the poultry curious,
they poke their heads thru the chicken wire and the coon bites off the head.

Yeah, nasty, I know. Hardware
cloth is our friend,

Best success with your chicks!

Thank you Karen,
I had bought a small pet gazebo and silly me didn't think anything would happen with us standing right there. That is how it happened, the cat bolted and chick panicked, tried to get out and cat grabbed her neck and pulled her through. Ugh. I have since bought more hardware cloth (neverending) an have wrapped entire thing. Has a tarp roof and chicks will not be left unsupervised while in it.

Dang good thing they weren't out free ranging yet. Sheesh.

Like you said, lesson learned.
