Items stolen/Trespassing - Progress on our fence *pics post 91*

Last night was eventful - it's a long story.

Our neighbor (Ken... the one who noticed the strange truck and who has been very helpful) came over. He had taken another neighbor's dog back to him (John Wilkins) and got BSing with him. He mentioned that we had our 4 wheeler stolen. John said that another neighbor (Mark) said that his kids found a red 4 wheeler in the woods behind their house the other day.
So, Mike and Ken went and talked to Mark and walked up where the kids saw the 4 wheeler. It wasn't there. Then Mark mentioned that he had heard that another neighbor (Perry AKA Rocky) sold a red 4 wheeler to a guy on a county road not too far away. So, Mike and Ken went to that guy's house to talk to him.
At that point, I called the sheriff's office and asked that they send someone out. Mike and Ken came back without finding the 4 wheeler, but did feel like the guy who supposedly bought it seemed suspicious. The sheriff's deputy got to the house and took everyone's statements and told us that Perry is known to be a theif and that he steals stuff and sells it to get money for his heroin habit (lovely, huh). So, the deputy left and went to Perry's house. We saw him go back past our house, but he didn't stop and tell us anything.
Around 10:20 Mark called our house and said that the person who had our 4 wheeler would be calling us and that we would be getting our 4 wheeler back. It just didn't sit right with me so I called the sheriff's office again. The dispatcher took the info. Sometime after 11, the deputy who had been at our house called us. We told him what Mark had said and he asked for Mark's number, which we gave to him.
This morning Mike called Mark to see what happened. The deputy came to Mark's house around 2am. Apparently they found our for sure that the guy on the county road had bought it from Perry for $800. They went to that guy's house and got the 4 wheeler back, but took it to the station as evidence.
The sheriff's office called today and said that the 4 wheeler was released and we could make arrangements to pick it up. Then the company that towed it to the sheriff's office called and now WE have to pay the tow bill before we can get it back. Of course the detective in charge wasn't in by the time we got home, so we have to wait till tomorrow to get it.
No word on the chainsaw, though. I talked to the deputy this evening and he said they're still working on finding it.

Short version: We are getting the 4 wheeler back. One nice neighbor helped us track it down. The heroin addict neighbor and his buddies stole it and sold it for $800. The sheriff's dept finally came out and tracked it down and took it to their station as evidence. No sign of the chainsaw yet.

In some rural areas, it's quite common for thievery to support a drug habit to abound. It's that way here, too. Glad you're getting the 4 wheeler back, but I'm sure you still feel very unsettled about people coming onto your property, especially drugged up ones!

What a story.... so glad you are getting it back... also glad most of your neighbors seem to be good people and watch out for each other.

Oh the chainsaw was sitting on the rack of the 4 wheeler when it was stolen, so I'm sure it's the same person/group of people. It will just depend on who he sold it to!

We haven't gotten to the point of prosecution - Perry seems to have skipped town for a while. Ken and his wife heard that they haven't been able to find him (Ken's house is next to Perry's). I feel bad, though. Perry's posse threatened Ken because they knew he helped us. Anyway, we WILL be pressing charges and I hope they can do something to this guy!

My hubby bought me a chainsaw today (his was a huge professional series chainsaw with a 20" bar - it was hard for me to use it). So, now we have a chainsaw we can use until we see if his turns up. Since we heat with wood we were having a tough time not having a chain saw around. So, tomorrow I'm going to be starting to cut down all the little dinky trees in the woodlot by the road and just leave the few big trees. I want it to be easier to see anyone who comes through there - plus I hope to work on fencing it in and putting a gate at the end of the oil well road to keep unauthorized people out! Once the survey is finished, we'll be starting on the rest of the fence, I hope.

Thanks so much to all of you for your support. It means a lot to me!

Wow glad you got the 4 wheeler back.

How much is that survey gonna cost you? I called and asked about one and they said $400 and I said "no thanks"

The neighbor's house sold recently and they got a survey done so I'm gonna sink a fence post before that little survey flag gets mowed over.

I'm kind of lucky. My best friend (who I often call my adopted big brother since he's been my best buddy for over 10 years now) is a surveyor. Our property was surveyed in 1999. Monday night we went out with him and located the main property corner pins (lots of them since we have all those neighbors to the north). Saturday he is coming back and we are marking the property line every 100' or so. I told him I would pay him, but I expected a reduced rate because I would help him so he wouldn't have to bring an employee along (I have to do some surveying sometimes at work, so I can run the rod for him with no problem). Monday he asked for 1/2 dozen eggs as payment. I gave him a dozen and also fed him dinner. I am going to try to bake his favorite, peach pie, to give him on Saturday, but I'll still gladly pay him if he asks me to do so!
