Acan beamed with pride, his eyes shining under his shaggy brown mop of hair. He managed to look at the Queen's hands, and, mumbling thank you, lumbered on to the princess's room.

Lillia smiled and put the flowers on her dresser, before getting back to work.

Acan arrived at the princess Jade's door. He looked at the blooms he had chosen for her this morning. He hoped very much that she might approve of them. He knocked on the door.

Magatha slowly makes her way to feed the hens and let them into selected parts of the garden to forage and help turn the soil. She takes a little stool with her so she can sit among them and keep them safe. Her hands shake with a slight tremor associated with age and a lifetime of labor. She fiddles with the latch, her arthritic fingers have a bit of a time grasping. Her icy blue eyes survey the garden as she looks for the best place to lead the hens. Sometimes she would lead them outside the walls when she was feeling particularly adventurous. Acan didn't mind, as long as Magatha didn't let them dig holes or eat produce meant for the kitchen. He was grateful for their help in keeping down pests and fertilizing around the plants.

"Allow me to get that for you, lady Martha." Rayko said as he hurried over to assist her. "It's a glorious day to have the hens out, is it not?" He asked conventionally.

" yes, young one. It is a glorious day." Magatha gratefully allowed the young man to assist her with opening the latches. The hens spilled out of the henhouse, eager to glean whatever goodies they could find in and around the garden. Magatha slowly bent down to pick up her stool, then straightened up to shuffle towards the hens.

( I wasn't sure how to address her. Madam, ma'am or lady. So I went with lady, for the flattering aspect. )

"If you would permit me to carry your stool, I would be honored. In fact, may I pass some time with you, lady Martha? I fear I have become quite a recluse here lately and would enjoy yours and your chickens companionship." Rayko said with honesty.

Magatha was flattered. " You would see fit to pass the time with an old lady?" She smiled. She was pleased at this young man's politeness. "There would be nothing better than a little company, and the hens are my sweet girls, they are," she cooed at her hens, as they flocked around her feet. Magatha handed her stool carefully to Rayko, her old fingers uncurling with some difficulty. She leaned upon her cane, then said," it may be easier if I were to fly: these old legs just don't move like they should anymore. I can still fly a little ways, if you are holding the stool for me." Transforming into a large magpie, her cane clattered to the ground, causing a few of the hens to cackle and bolt, but they quickly came back together, following Magatha as she glided slowly above them.

Rayko held her stool and smiled after her, before stooping to pick up her cane. He laughed as the hens and magpie moved as a group. It felt good to have levity after the seriousness of their circumstances over the last few days. He then hurried along after them. When he caught up with the flock, he looked around curiously. "Where would the lady like to sit?" Rayko asked.

" Oh, any place will do. The girls will stay close to me," she said, shifting with a sigh back to her bent human shape. They settled near the orchard, where the apples were starting to fall, and the chickens eagerly cleaned up the fallen fruit as well as the bugs attracted to the orchard's bounty. Settling slowly onto her stool, Magatha laid her cane across her lap. " So, you are a handsome man. Have you no wife yet? Certainly not for lack of prospective ladies, I'm sure!" She cackled merrily.
