Their shape, size, comb type, leg color, skin color, egg color, and whether they have feathered feet, a beard, a crest, extra toes, etc.

Oh, it takes a lot of time and research to know right away what breeds chickens are. Kinda like dogs or cats if you’re a fan of them.
Every breed of chicken has their own personality and distinct features.
Your roo looks like a Bearded d' Uccle Bantam, but not totally sure. He’s very pretty! Do you have more chickens?

Usually you can tell by what they look like, for example:
A barred Plymouth Rock will have gray and white barred feathers, yellow legs and a single comb.

A silver laced Wyandotte will have pink legs, a rose comb and black and white laced feathers

A buff orpington will have golden/yellow feathers, pink legs and a single comb.

And a dark Brahma will have dark brown pencilled feathers, slate legs, and a pea comb.

There are many, many breeds in the world, but yours looks like a D'Uccle or a D'anver.

To me, your chicken looks like a d'uccle mix. But, if he came from a hatchery, he might just be some sort of project color d'uccle.

Hi @clawdeen360! You could Google “chicken breeds”... there will be pictures and descriptions of each breed. I have learned about a whole lot of breeds this way since I got my first chicks this spring. I especially have learned about the breeds I have AND the breeds I plan to get! There is plenty of info
