The problem with mad cow disease is that it is passed through consumption of the nervous tissue (brain, spinal cord/fluid). TECHNICALLY, chickens COULD get a disease by eating chicken. Not very likely though. Chances are, the author was being cautious. The last thing they want is to say "oh it's ok, go ahead and feed them chicken" then something happen, the chicken owner blame it on the author and it all goes downhill from there.

I agree with that. Also, there is a lot of concern about the possibility of avian "mad cow", but they are still a lot of unanswered questions about it. The problem is that the contaminated beef was rendered and got into poultry feed, and now they don't know if that will lead to a poultry strain of mad cow. The only thing they seem sure of is that it is possible for an avian type to occur, which is the reason they don't recommend the feeding of chicken to chicken. Does that mean that if you feed your chickens chicken that they will get it? No, but it also means that you can't know that they won't get it either. Again, that is the reason for the caution. As for myself, knowing as much as I do about mad cow and it's implications for human health, I don't feed chicken to my chickens. If they catch and kill small animals, that's natural, and there is nothing to support that they will get prion disease from that. But I won't provide chicken to them.

LOL yup -DH thinks I am sick out of my mind when I butcher a tough roo -make rice chicken eggs stew and feed it right back to them!

And the issue with feeding nervous tissue was the fact that it was from sick animals. Scrappie infected sheep that died/were sick shouldn't be used as feed to cows.

When my daughter was in Kindergarten she took her pet chicken to school and the kids went wild about feeding her chicken from lunch. Totally tripped them out!

TO FUNNY!

Just thought I stop back by and say Thanks to the OP for posting this thread. I learned that I could feed cooked food to my chicks yesterday. So When I went home I cooked up some ground beef and made dinner. Now before dinner I had offered a grape and the top part of a strawberry to our girls. They pecked it a bit but was not really interested. We had leftover's on our plate so when cleaning up I tossed the girls 1 piece of ground beef... I walked into the kitchen came back and it was gone! Those girls sure do love meat!
