Ivermectin for DOGS for Heartworms?

My Bloodhound was diagnosed today with heartworms. She gave him some medicine because he's not a candidate for treatment yet. I'm very interested in ivermectin. I see the preventative dose is 1/10. But is that the same dosage to kill existing heartworms?

it will not kill the adult heart worms.

I know it takes time. The adult heartworms will eventually die off. He's not a candidate for treatment, so I can not just do nothing. What would you recommend?

Well I would first ask why he is not a candidate for treatment?
Maybe the treatment medicine would kill him? so I would wonder if the Ivermectin would do the same.
I have never had an dog with heart worms, but I'm guessing you could just love him and baby him till it's his time to go?

I really don't know.
I just had a dog pass this week but from old age. She was 16.

He's not a candidate right now because we are treating pneumonia and a viral infection. After this is over, he will be. But I didn't want to not do anything until he can get treated

You can give him heartguard (should be able to purchase from your vet) which will keep the heartworm infection from getting any worse. Over time heartguard will eliminate the infection but that takes about 2-3 years.

Please please please do not give your pets ivermectin without the guidance of a vet. I can't tell you how many pets we have come through the clinic with ivomec toxicity which is just an awful thing to watch.

I don't know anything specific about your case but my guess is your vet is going to do immiticde treatment once he's through the pneumonia and viral infection which would take maybe 2 or 3 weeks. Your not going to make his condition worse in the next 2-3 weeks and your not going to make it any better. I would just do nothing until he is well and is a candidate for treatment.

It won't get worse? He will be treated in 3 months, once he's done with his medicine. I did talk to my vet a little while ago. They did say I could give 1/10 cc/10 lbs until he's ready for the treatment
