What is the best way to catch peafowl?

If they are in a pen then we use a large fish net catch hold on the ground then pick them up and hold in your arms if not penned then we get them in one. Visit this webpage it has photos and everything.

I have 15 grown peafowl, some always penned, others for now due to more then usual predators because of Texas drought. Problem with using the net is most are like pets I feed from my hand. Don't like frightening them. I had to catch a couple several days ago I sold and scared them all to death. LOL, I netted one by mistake and it won't come anywhere near me now.

No one said you had to catch them, someone asked how too so they inject their peafowl and this is how we do it. Yea it freaks them out but they will get over it, when you take kids to the Doc they are scared and upset but they get over it as well, but like was said before if you don't want to catch them then put wormer in their water.

Darlene, I rarely use my net and when I do, it's mostly for the chickens. Yet, every single time I haul the net out of the pea barn, the peas run like hell. Even if I just pass thru their aviary to get to the chickens. They remember. It's kinda comical, actually, because I haven't netted any of the peas for a long time. I sit on the bench with treats and they take turns sitting next to me. I can just give them that special "hug", collect their legs, and examine them. But show them Evil Mr. Net and they scatter!

LOL, I know what you mean. They don't forget that net. Maybe it should hang in the aviary so they'd be used to it. When I bought my Java peacock the seller just reached out and without any effort it was in his arms. I was amazed. I've not had to catch any but a few times and it was like a war zone, haha!! So...this bench you sit on...I assume you have spray bottle and rag near by. It's been a while but when I sit in a chair in the pens with treats the peas are all over me. Almost need to go in wearing a suit of armor. I've had some pretty good scratches with them jumping up for food. I know some of you name your birds. Mine all go by "Poopy feet".

This is where the differents between a PET owner and a BREEDER is as a breeder we want our birds to be healthy so we don't sell YOU a sick bird so we as BREEDERS do what must be done to keep them well, but it has been said in this thread many times and I guess no one reads it because it has been said " IF YOU DON'T WANT TO CATCH YOUR BIRDS USE SAFE GUARD FOR GOATS AND VALBAZEN IN THEIR WATER " Plus we DON'T go to other forums and talk BAD about people that try to help you from this forum.

Darlene, guess I've been lucky. My flock has established their pecking order and no one gets bossy or they don't get any treats. (It doesn't take long for them to learn this.) I've not been scratched - yet - although it will probably happen. I've been in animal rescue for over 25 years and have never been bitten by a dog, but that will probably happen too, because I work puppymill busts and hoarder cases with unsocialized, terrified creatures. When sitting with the peas, I sit in the middle of the park bench so there's room for one bird on each side. My two newest hens are still a little shy, so I close them in an aviary with me and they are the only 2 getting treats with no competition or distraction. Hey, how many Java do you have now?

That has to be exciting doing raids on puppy mills and other dog rescue situations. You must be good to have not gotten bitten. Be sure and let me know if ever you know about a hoarder case in Spring Branch, TX. Might be me and my birds, LOL!! I'd rather not be home when you show up, haha!!!

Only have 1 Java pair and managed one chick from them. Wasn't they're fault.....was my incubating skills. Actually she was on eggs for 3 days but got off when I put 5 Spalding chicks in a pen off the ground next to the one she was in. Think the chirping alarmed her that she had chicks and refused to get back on the nest....just paced the wire between her and them. I then proceded to kill all but one in the bator, LOL!!!

I love my Spalding that I believe to be 75% Green. Kept 3 from last years hatch and have 7 from this year but need to sell most of them. Sold 2 last week for $85 each at almost 4 months old and think she wants more. I'd like to see how they grow out but sure gets tiring cleaning those pens.

If your peafowl like bread, you can squirt some on some bread , roll it into a ball and toss to them..... if you can get them to eat it separately so one doesn't hog it all. When I have a lot of birds too do I buy one of the dosing syringe dispensers that you can dial in the amount and when you press the trigger that is the dose it squirts out. I wait till all mine are sleeping at night and walk up behind them, slip the syringe between the shoulder feathers and squirt. I can do a lot of birds in a short time.

Well, I've run a small experiment with my peafowl and turkeys.

Having read that you could use Ivomec in their drinking water, and also some folks say that it wouldn't work because the Ivomec was oil based, I decided to bite the bullet and try it myself. First, let me add, that I'm sure that giving the fowl the Ivomec directly, either as an injection, or as an oral "drench", would be best, but, my situation makes handling my peafowl difficult, so I would rather not. Anyway, the first thing I did was add about 1/2 cc of Ivomec injectable for cattle, to some tap water to observe what it did. It did not act like an oil, it immediately went into solution! But, it also formed a white precipitate, that settled on the bottom. Hmm,....I wonder if stirring will desolve the precipitate,....voila! Into solution it went!! So,....today my peafowl and turkey are drinking Ivomec spiked water!!

Please weigh in on your experience with Ivomec, and any other thoughts.
This is very helpful ... but I was wondering how I might use this product in the drinking water for 7 ducks? Any advice ... for an aging 77 year old woman who has it for chasing 7 ducks around the pen? Pleeze.
