Day 510: Despite the rainy, gross weather today, Ivory and the girls still enjoyed a whole day of foraging! (Well, mostly just Ivory and Jasmine, the youngest hen...Hope is still broody and May is still recovering from an unknown leg injury, temporarily crippling her, so they spent the day inside the coop.
)
Ivory and the girls also got a bowl of leftover pasta from last night for a treat, which they scarfed down in probably less than a minute!
It's funny how it seems like they eat so much, yet they act like they're starving...spoiled rotten? Nahhh, not at all.
As for Hope and her eggs, they aren't doing too well, unfortunately.
Weather it's the extra moisture/humidity in the air lately, or something else, the eggs just don't seem to be developing. It could be a lack of fertility, but I doubt it because when I've cracked the eggs open before (NOT the developing ones, of course!), I've usually seen the distinguished bulls-eye mark on the yolk...But, I've currently had to throw away about 10 rotten eggs that were either never fertile in the first place or had started developed but were early quitters. A couple days ago I candled a recently-laid egg and I saw the beginnings of a possible embryo developing...Today, candled again and confirmed that it was yet another quitter. There are 5 eggs left, which have been recently laid and all have ?'s on them because it's too early to tell if anything will develop.
Anyways, here are the promised pictures from today! Enjoy!
"Are you coming to give us more treats, mum?"
Ivory getting a closer look...
Ivory following Jasmine under the fence...
Ivory coming over to check up on everything while I was taking pictures of the broody girls in the coop...
Aaaandddd....the two broody girls:
"Ahhhh!!! The light! It burnsss!!!"
The evil broody glare...
And if you look closely here, it almost looks like her eyes are red...which shows why you shouldn't mess with a broody hen, unless you want to risk losing a finger or having your camera pecked to pieces.
I was lucky enough to make it out of there alive...
