I don't have chickens yet! We are getting them next spring once our coop is built. Cherokee was a working military dog so she is pretty intense and lots of prey drive. I am a behavior specialist and already trained her to accept our cats (they are dog savvy and do not run) and she totally respects them--they even slap her on the nose if she heads for their dinner bowl. We also have a very small parrot (parrotlet) she has gotten used to but if he flies around a lot (he has a huge flight cage) she will bark at him. She has lived with us 2 years now so I am hoping

with my guidance she'll see them as her flock and not dinner.

WOW, yea Thank goodness your dog was ok...

We have a rat terrior daushand mix her name is DIXIE and she like your guy there is a fighter and protector too.... she hunts the field mice, and anything else that will go bump in the dark tried to go after a skunk a couple of times but didnt like the spraying they did to her...lol ... she is even protective of our chickens almost to a fault as my husband accidently spooked some of the chickens and they squaked and here came dixie looking at my hubby like... I am watching you... it was funny my husband was like Its ok Dixie the babies are fine......

Oh sh....t. Am I the only person here who feels badly for the young racoon? You said the fight went on for a while. That is so horrible. I know they can kill our animals but my idealistic mind would rather have the presence of my two dogs out there to discourage the wild critters from trying to get near my animals. Racoons are so intelligent, clever and lets face it...beautiful. Just so long as they stay away from our pets.
By the same token even foxes (when they are not near our chickens) are also beautiful in their own way. Your dog is brave, they send them down fox holes in England and Ireland after the hounds have sent the fox 'to earth' That is the reason they have docked tails, less to grab on to.
Anyway just wanted to add my thoughts......

Go Titus Go!!!!
Coons are the one thing I fear - our dogs are intrepid hunters in the middle of the night and have bagged several possums, but so far we've been fortunate enough to not encounter any coons. I dread the day . . .

Oh My Goodness,

You must have been freaking out! I would have been dying inside. Great job by a little guy.

I am sooo glad things worked out well.

Congrats and extra snuggles to Titus.

The vet did find one deep puncture wound over Titus' eye, lots of little bites/scratches on his muzzle and one ear is bitten as well as some scratches on his belly that I'm treating. He's got a rough coat, so that hid a lot of marks but also served to protect him. Anyway, thanks to all you who urged me to take him in and have him checked out. No booster shots needed. The vet prescribed some antibiotics just in case.

Sadness is what came to my mind first too.

I felt it was a terrible way to die even if its nature's way in the wild. Thats why I don't let my girls out when they go crazy barking at something outside. I also do that to keep them safe too. My motto is to scare them off and secure my pets enough to make them avoid coming back.
