Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Ok so I'm in again... Just set 39 barnyard mutts and 3 welsummers (sp).... haven't added water yet, waiting for the incubator to stabilize and see where its at.. I've heard such great things about doing a dry hatch but I am alittle afraid to do it right now.. I need some chicks to replace a few of my older hens and to be layers through next winter... after this hatch I may do a test hatch and do it dry to see how it does..

But in the meantime

The long wait and stress begins again!!!
I know what you mean! To help myself cope with the stress, I downloaded those temp and egg charts on the learning center Hatching 101. I like it because I can be obsessed with the eggs without touching them so much! I candled nearly every day until lockdown the first go-round, but this time, I am only candling on days 7, 14, and just before lockdown. We'll see if I can do it anyway!

Awe! Cute! This time around, I have put all of my eggs in a carton, and though they're only on day 2, I am wondering how well the chicks do with hatching while in the carton? You've only had one so far, and it looks like it's a good method. I am just curious as to what happens if they happen to pip at the wrong end! :)

Try getting jumbo size egg cartons. I cut a bunch of holes in them for air circulation. I had to help it out of the carton eventually. Couldn't help to see it struggling to free itself. I quickly snatched it, shell and all and placed it on the floor of the incubator.

I really worried about that with my bantam eggs - I was worried that they wouldn't be able to "climb" out. I ended up taking them out of the carton at lockdown - and in the end I'm glad I did. Mine just seemed exhausted.

Oh my well second hatch and on day 11 I smelled something very off in my living room at first thought my dog had gas then went to turn eggs and my incubator had a awful smell in it sniffed ever egg my 13 yo found this very funny bit man let me tell you the smell of a stinker is very noticeable to say the least so now I know the smell and well not be blaming it on my dog anymore !

Here they come!!!!
Set on the 15th

Turned diligently... at 99.5 degrees as per the little giants destruction book... by guess and by golly on the humidity... and I had a pip yesterday AM at about 5... he finally showed up out of shell at 10P. This AM at 4, there were TWO boppin around in there
Then before bed last night, the cochin egg dweller blew a big hunk out of HIS shell revealing a Blonde beauty.

He just got transferred to the Brooder along with his pretty much dry and froggy clutch mates, who I am temporarily calling Sam Spade (everything is DARK... even Toes, Nose, and Comb... (Yah Yah, I know, there's no nose)... But just a bit ago, when I transferred HIM out (no feather feet, so he may have only got the coloring of his fluff butt mother..

I got the yucky shell out, and as much of the gludge from that shell, and there are 9 pipped, and two more who are hollering!!!

So far so good! Pretty soon I'll be up to my pits in chickies...

OOh, forgot the name of the other one... Pink comb, mottled toes, grayish kinda freckled looking fluff... "Gandalf the Gray' (and that comb is pretty prominent already, I hope I guessed Cock correctly)!!

That's what I worry about- the struggling. I really like using the cartons to turn the eggs before lockdown though. Maybe I can find a jumbo carton before lockdown!

Yes it can be very strong. You need to check for them a lot because they can cause your other eggs to get affected and die.
Also if you don't remove them they explode and you really don't want that to happen to you!!!!!!!! It makes a colostomy bag smell like a rose bush! lol

Mine are now at the end of day 19 - No sign of anything but it is early yet. I am sooooo hoping to get a little chick! Though I have done nothing to help them this time much at all. I do still think the temp was on the low side and therefore again am thinking I will get a late hatch if anything.

It is all a bit eggxisting!!!!

I was just worried about them drowning. Since they've been upright the whole time, I figured it would be best for them to hatch that way. Next time I'll put them on their side at lockdown. I just won't get shipped eggs.
