WHAT!! When did you ever have to start doing all this for posted eggs?
I heard that you just let them sit for 24hrs in the cool, warm then to room temp then put them in the bator with turning and wait till day 18 to go into shut down where you lay them flat and turn rocking off.
her eggs have detached air cells....all of the above is in the hope they will heal

Well, I'm new to the board recently. I'm new to chickens period! This spring we bought some babies at the local farm store, planning to raise them, then take them to the barn I board my horse at. Well, two went to the barn, but we became really attached to our two little banty's! Our golden seabright ended up being a rooster, so we found him a new home because we can't have rooster's. So, then we went on a search for a hen around our hen's age. We ended up getting a serama. Guess what?! Yup, SHE turned out to be a HE. So, we are currently looking for a new home for him as well :( Love the little dude! He's so cute and sweet! BUT....recently, our hen started laying eggs! Surprised she did because we do not keep a light on her or anything. The first eggs came during the big storm and were frozen. I broke those open to look for a white speck or a bulls eye in them. I couldn't see a thing in any of them! Well, I bought an incubator on craigslist, just in case they are fertile. They have been in for 3 days. I'm so anxious! I candled today and I swear I see the line that you all are talking about! The air pocket area! Her eggs turn speckled when held to the light, so it makes it kind of hard to see much, but I swear I'm seeing it! Would nonfertile eggs also show that ring on the wide end? Yesterday she layed another egg, so I broke that one open and I swear I see the bulls eye! It's hard to see, and even harder to see in the pics. I will post the pics and maybe you all can tell me if you see it. If it is so, I would hope that means that the 3 eggs I have in the incubator are also fertile! In the pics, I think I see the bulls eye a little to the left under the flash from the camera. Closer to the bottom edge of the yolk. What do you all think?!
How old is your rooster?

I have 2 guineas. I think they are buff. Definately not white but I read Buff is very rare and I got these from an auction when they were a week old. I don't know what else they could be. Very pretty. They have blue eyes. The one was a pain until the LOTG took care of the problem. Good old Max. They think he is one giant guinea.

That procedure really should be done every time you get eggs in the mail. The chalaza is almost always severed and setting them the next day and not turning for 2-3 days helps it to mend itself. Oh, and not candling every day like a lot of people do!! Let them eggs sit nice and gentle like until day 18!!

Yep, already has the waterer and food bowl right beside her. She has been in the barn since just before NYD. Found her hiding on her nest, so don't know how long she was on it before that. But up to a week. So she is right at that mark or just past it.

Well, we went ahead and candled the broody's eggs. They are a dancing in the eggs. Looks like they are only about 14-16 days.

So awaiting we will be.

Hi everyone, JDchicks sent me the link to this fabulous thread. So I am new to chickens and I am incubating my first batch of eggs from my own Silkie hen. I only have one hen and two rooters, so I gathered eggs over a 10 day period and I am now on day 9.... I almost didn't put in the oldest eggs cause everything I read led me to believe they were too old. I figured heck I won't loose anything giving it a try, discard it now discard it later...... no difference. I have studied the candling charts and I guess there is a big learning curve with that stuff. On day 6 I thought my 3 oldest eggs were goners. But today I candled again and I don't see any change with my 5 youngest eggs but the 3 oldest that I thought were red ring (guess I don't know what I am looking at) I started to see the veining. then I took a 2nd flashlight and I see something moving! Yipeee! So the three I thought were no good I think are good and then that leaves the 5 that I thought were good what is going on with them? I just see a solid blob floating around in there. Do you think they were not fertile? Are they still developing and maybe they are behind the others but that doesn't make sense.....What's going on! LOL Now I am sorry I didn't throw in that egg I gathered 2 days after I started incubating..... I read that it was ok to do it next day but that was the cut off.

Welcome. So glad you joined us. I usually wait until lockdown (day 18) to chuck anything that might have something growing in it. All clear egss get tossed on day 10.

Which candling chart are you using?

They are Foley..............
Where in Oregon??..I am in Corbett............
Rotten luck....I could use another roo......
