Janoel Incubator

Hi had so many problems with my janoel 10 so I took measures into my own hands!

I bought a digital hum/temp device and put it in with the eggs.
I then changed the HU settings on the janoel) to something insane to play with like 50.

what I then noticed that the janoel setting was 2/3 degrees (c) lower than the digital board the janoel said.
So I upped the temp on the Janeol and monitored the inside digital temp device until the temp was stable. (37.5)

I did the same with the humidity but that's a little harder, its just a case of monitoring it every half day and at hatch time stick a damp sponge over the water canal and watch the humidity rise to what you need it to be.

hope this helps!

Hi everybody! I have the 48 as well. It holds a steady temp but not what the controls read. I've had mine down on 37.2-37.3 this hatch. Last hatch ran on 37.4 and started hatching on day 19. I monitor the temp with two additional, calibrated thermometers. I've also noticed some hot and cool spots so I rotate the eggs position in the turner every few days. I have not been adding water to the channels prior to lockdown. I have been filling a mayo jar lid set under the grate to keep the humidity 10-20%. For lockdown, I have to fill both channels and the open areas of the bottom to get to 60%. My biggest complaint is the tiny, useless windows! If anybody is able to retrofit it for better viewing, please post!

Ok update- on our 4 hatch with the Janoel 48.
Things I have done to improve it:

Made a box out of foam roofing insulation- helped keep the interior temp very stable- I check with a pharm thermometer-
Rerouted the temp sensor so it sits lower and more towards the center of the incubator.

The temp read out is off and the closest I could calibrate it was +/- .2c.....I rely on my pharm thermometer

I purchased some QGF foam humidity sponges- this was the best thing I could have done- we add a very small amount of water about twice a week- during incubation- I shoot for 40-48%.
We run staggered hatches and so far- I am hatching 100% on my pheasants, about 95% on my quail and 100% on my chickens, turkeys look good but still have another 2 weeks to go...

Great job on the mods. Congratulations on your hatches.

My hubby made me a coolerbator that worked wonderfully, so I won't be buying an incubator any time soon. I appreciate the reviews.

Hi Tyaloria,

I'm just about to lockdown 5 eggs next fri and try hatching them over the weekend in a janoel 10. Eggs are currently in a king suro automatic but I have a staggered hatch so need to take the first 5 out early. What did you get your humidity to and was it easy? I'm thinking of doing a run this week without the eggs to try the incubator out as have not used it before. I'm so worried as know it's on me to keep humidity steady and give the ducklings a chance at hatching out but I'm reading lots of reviews on this incubator and am very confused with what to do regarding temp and humidity. Do you by chance know what temp control you placed in with the eggs?

Hannah :)

Hi Hannah,
I was hard work but once I have a bee in my bonnet about something that's it!

(all temp settings are in Celsius)

the hardware I added was a : off ebay.
MINI DIGITAL INCUBATOR HUMIDITY METER THERMOMETER FERTILE EGG HATCHING CHICKS
nice and cheap. Fill up your water trough to the max and take a reading. I keep mine sat on the trough. It has humidity and temp on there so you cant go wrong.
Pull the temp lead from the fan part as far down into the incubator as far as it will go into a straight line (this isn't very far)
now watch and see what happens.
start off with the instruction manuals settings and trust me they don't work out. Gradually up the temp until you get a nice stable 37.5 ish give or take a few degrees. I tend to go between 37.5 - 38.

If you are using your janeol as an incubator temperature is your main concern, if like me you use it as a hatching unit humidity is your concern.

to get the humidity to between 65% - 85% (I choose mid 70's) play with your digital gauge again.
Remember that the amount of eggs in the unit will give off a certain amount of humidity so you have to monitor it.
If you still cant get into the 70% range cut off a piece of sponge that will fit on the trough and wet is with warm water., that should give you a nice boost.
weirdly I find if the temp goes down the humidity goes up. don't ask me why!

remember more eggs create more heat and humidity so its worth checking every hour or so until you get a stable reading.

If the humidity is too low the chick's membrane will dry around it and suffocate it. I has a few like that on my last batch of silkies. It was so sad

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Im on day 17 with mine looking good. Humidity is a pain tho I could afd a bucket of water and it would still spike for a minute then drop quick again..

Has any of you got the one with no way to see in? I cant see in mine and im concerned as Im in first lockdown tomorrow and wont be sble to check/time pips etc Or won't be able to see if and how many has hatched. As its bad to open bator during lockdown what am I supposed to do and time safely

Bloody nightmare starts lol

Just lock it down and see what happens.
I know they say 65 - 85% but i've had the best hatches in the mid 70's.
Its ok to open it to have a little peek, I do as its exciting!
