Ohh MisfitMarie that makes me nervous because theres not alot of movement at all but i can tell they're still going for it! what does this mean are mine a bit further along than yours or a bit behind and i candled and i have a couple of air cell that are weird shapes one of them the air cell actually has a bit that goes down the side of the shell but i don't think it will do much to it i just hope i get at least that one chick that i was hoping for, did you just put the three in that you showed us in the pic or are there more how many in total are due to hatch on the same day as mine?

I wouldn't worry! I think they must spend hours resting. I have three Ameraucanas left that are due to hatch on the same day. I also put in some Hamburg bantams and Silver laced cochin bantams as well.

There's been a few eggs that I've candled that don't move at all... I check on them again a few hours later, and they're moving!

So I wouldn't worry too much. It's also getting very, very hard to see as they get bigger and take over the egg.

For the weird-shaped air cells, have you considered using the egg carton method for hatching? I had excellent success with it for my BLack Copper Marans... at least the ones with weird looking cells.

I'll take some pictures for you when I get home tonight! I'll go ahead and put them into lockdown twelve hours early so you can see.

Basically, I check all the eggs on day 18.

If they have a weird looking air cell, I put them pointy-end down into a trimmed-down egg carton piece. It acts like a pocket/support, holding the egg up straight with the fat end up. I also make sure to cut a hole in the bottom of each carton piece to make sure there is airflow in case a chick pips at the wrong end.

If the air cells appear normal, I let them lay on their sides during lockdown.

I'll totally take some pictures when I get home tonight. I've heard that it helps with shipped eggs. It worked for my BCM eggs. =)

I LOVE ARAUCANAS!

We go into lockdown on the 16th! =) I have to go home and ready my hatcher as soon as I get off of work....very excited!

These will be my first araucanas, I was really excited to find a pure lavender flock not far from us (well, only 100km away!) so can't wait for those babies in 10 days. I just ordered another batch of those eggs for next week too.

My fingers are crossed for you guys - it's already the 16th here, has been a very long morning as our twins turned 9, so decided to wake up at 4.45am. They weren't too impressed at being sent back to bed but that is just too early for me to function especially in school holidays! Not even the horses or dogs were awake at that hour.

BackyardJack, here is my current setup:




First, I cut out little cups out of the egg cartons. This one ended up being just a tad too small, so I would cut a bit higher. Poke a big hole in the bottom.



Here are my three Ameraucana eggs. Two are cozy in the little cups, because they had weird looking air cells. Sadly, I'm pretty sure the one on its side is a gonner... I've had really bad luck lately with shipped eggs, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and put it in there anyway.



I'll add more shotglasses of water tomorrow, when it's "officially" lockdown.

And here is everyone, ready for lockdown: Ameraucana, Spangled Hamburg, Lavender Hamburg, and Cochin.

Oh, I also need to add two blue splash silkies in there as well. I almost forgot!

Hi everyone again!! No it dosnt make it hard for them to get out at the angle. I love this method and use it all the time even for non shipped eggs. I find it easier to monitor eggs progress this way and it makes clean up just that little bit easier. Here is a few pics of my cut down egg carton method.

My eggs went in to lock down I am going to just do it normally but next time I am going to defiantly give it a try
