JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Sorry for the late response! They are all serama. I am thinking the white and black vesty looking one might be a mottled black and white, but there's really no telling with these little guys. All that I can see so far of his incoming flight feathers are white, but the shafts haven't opened even halfway up yet. It will be interesting to see how these lil butts change One of the babies turned out to be a bit of a candy corn face! They are named Jack. I will be sad when their egg tooth drops.

I feel so much more relaxed this time around then I did the 1st time. Last time I was constantly checking on the incubator and driving myself crazy over thinking everything. Temp and humidity are holding pretty steady. Tomorrow morning I will weigh all the eggs and see if I have the humidity at the correct level and then Saturday I will candle the eggs.

I haven't even been tempted to candle them early so I'm proud of myself for that. Just letting them do their thing.

About candling.... last time we had 1 clear on day 7 and I tossed it right after. I recently read that some people keep clears till day 10 and then only candle them on day 10. Should I hold onto clears till day 10 this time? Anyone have a clear at day 7 that ended up being something on day 10?

Today is lockdown for my second Jan hatch! Candled last night and it looks like all seven will go to the hatcher.

It was also day 10 for round three hatch.. I had set 18 and pulled 8 clears. Not sure what was going on there. Either way, I'm glad to have any in the dead of winter!

Hi all!!
Just joined this hatch-a-long. I have 14 polish eggs set in my incubator as a test batch from own flock. They have been set for just over 48 hours. I have hatched and raised all my polish barring my blue splash roo which I bought in. My two Roos are the blue splash he is called bash. My other roo is a silver laced frizzle called snowy.
Bash has five girls all gold lace, two frizzle and three smooth. Snowy has six girls two chamois, two gold lace and two white created black. I'm not sure how things are going to turn out as these are the first eggs to be incubated so it's a bit of pot luck for me. Here are a few pics

Ok so i ended up with only one 1 chick out of 11 eggs(6 made it to lockdown but one was dead before lockdown and i couldnt see enough to tell) So i lost 4 two wet and two shrinkwrapped.

Thursday the 4 frizzle eggs go into  lockdown

1/15 the 7 muscovy eggs go into lockdown along with 1 frizzle egg

i set 6 more frizzle eggs on 1/5 so should be in lockdown on 1/23

and i set 18 khaki campbell eggs last night(1/6) so lockdown for them is 1/31


So 4 hatches in January and one that is just going to miss January by about 3 days or so lol.

So sorry to hear about your last hatch. Sure hope your single chick is doing ok. Do you dry incubate? That's what I did with my last 4 eggs. Plus I really watched the air cell size at candling. I would adjust accordingly with how the air cells looked. And I stuck to my guns and never opened the incubator once it went into lockdown. My hatch before I had so many malpositioned eggs that I opened the incubator in a steamy hot bathroom to assist 4 chicks. It didn't do any good, I had like one chick survive that I had assisted, but ended up losing an additional 2 to shrinkwrapping. I will be setting some silkies eggs from 2 different sources this weekend. They will be brought to me from my brother-in-law about 3 hours away. I keeping my fingers crossed, both sources are wanting some new birds for their flock, I'm wanting some & my sister-in-law would like a couple. I have coached them on the correct way to collect & store eggs, in addition to packaging them safely for the ride up. Here's to hoping for a nice big batch of healthy silkies in about 24 days Best of luck to you with your remaining January hatches.

What beautiful birds you have. Really wish I had a better variety of colors in my flock. Each time I hatch a bunch of barnyard mixes, they are pretty plain.
