JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Thanks! I have two LG still air bators at present. I use the newer model as the hatcher since it has the nice deep base.. I'm actually having great luck with it this winter after not even planning to hatch in winter in the first place. Not sure if it's the weather helping or my skills improving, but things are definitely better than this summer. :/

DH and a friend have actually made a fridge bator for me but I have yet to see it.. :p (just a matter of transporting it here). Definitely got to get it by spring though!!

Nice to have your DH on board! I always like to see what people are having luck with bc I am still in a trial and error mode. I set my eggs is was 52• out and today it is -2. Kids are delayed too cold to walk. So, I think the styrobator is having a tough time regulating temps. Little brinsea...right on point. I have such a huge investment in eggs this round too...so, I don't wanna screw it up!

Ok so weigh in results are in!! I'm leaning towards my humidity is right on but I think weigh in on day 7 will better determine that. But I wanted to share and see if maybe anyone has a different idea.
I have 28 eggs in the incubator
5 didn't lose any weight
6 didn't lose quite enough but did lose some
1 lost a bit more then it should have
and 16 lost the correct amount

Now the thing is my scale only weighs whole grams so in determining how much they should lose they should end up not being any whole numbers. So when I am figuring how much they lost for instance egg #2 started out 49g it should have been 47.6 on weigh in and it was 48g so I rounded the 47.6 which means my egg lost the amount it should have (I am taking into account that the real weight may have been slightly under 48g but my scale just rounded up as I did). So that is mostly what happened with all the ones that have correct weights.

Now with the one that lost a bit more egg #24 started out at 48g and is now 46g... it should have been 46.64 so in my theory rounding up it should have only been 47g not 46g. But it could have very well been close to 46.64 but under 46.5 so my scale rounded down.

And the 6 that lost but not quite enough for example egg #8 started out 53g and was down to 52g. It should have been 51.48g today so rounding down it would have been 51g. Same thing here if it was close to 51.48 but over 51.5 my scale probably rounded to 52g.

And as for the 5 that didn't lose any weight they very well may have and just didn't lose quite enough for my scale to round them down.

I hope that all makes sense and I know I am really overthinking this but I really don't want to get to the very end again and realize I got all my eggs to lockdown but none of them made it because of humidity issues like last time.

With that being said, I am going to keep humidity where it is for now and revisit on day 7 which will be Sunday. I will get to candle on Saturday night! I am keeping my fingers crossed that my 1 polish egg and 3 possible polish or silkie eggs are gonna make it. I'm excited for all of them but mostly for those ones!

What beautiful birds you have. Really wish I had a better variety of colors in my flock. Each time I hatch a bunch of barnyard mixes, they are pretty plain.

Thankyou, I do love them :love This is the unknown for me as to colours quite excited as I just don't know what is going to emerge from these eggs!! If anything at all! Is just like the first time incubating again.

One week to go, why does this part take the longest?!?!?!?! I plan on candling again tonight just to check on everyone, since I've been incubating at low temps.

Its COLD here today! My outside thermometer says its 12F, and we got down to -2F last night with the wind chill. My incubator is at 99.5 right now and looks to be struggling to stay there. I covered it over with a towel to see if that would help it some. I don't want to fiddle with it since we're supposed to warm up in a couple of days, I'd be seriously mad if I had a bad spike right at the end!
Anyway, I'll update after I candle tonight :)

AWESOME!!!

My hideaway broody, Ebony, chicks started/finished hatching today~!!! 10/10 hatched!!! I left 1 chick with her and put the other 9 in the brooder!

that's great! Just curious... how come you chose to leave 1 with her and put 9 in the brooder?
