JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

that's great! Just curious... how come you chose to leave 1 with her and put 9 in the brooder?
Yeah...i knew that wiold be a Q...lol!!

Well, here hawks NEVER go for the adult chickens! They only go for the chicks!!! So, when a broodies eggs hatch, i leave 1 with her (i try and get a roo) and the rest in the brooder where they will be safe!! SO....rather one roo die than 10 hens...if you get what i mean!!
Does anybody on the Jan hatch members list know anyone thats in the HAL but not on the list??

:barnie
One week to go, why does this part take the longest?!?!?!?! I plan on candling again tonight just to check on everyone, since I've been incubating at low temps.

Its COLD here today! My outside thermometer says its 12F, and we got down to -2F last night with the wind chill. My incubator is at 99.5 right now and looks to be struggling to stay there. I covered it over with a towel to see if that would help it some. I don't want to fiddle with it since we're supposed to warm up in a couple of days, I'd be seriously mad if I had a bad spike right at the end!
Anyway, I'll update after I candle tonight :)

Same here...50 to -2 in five days! I have been adjusting my styrobator...with the wood stove fired up I am also having trouble keeping my humidity where I want it. Good luck for you!

makes sense. I was just curious. I haven't had a broody and this is only my 2nd time incubating. Maybe one day I'll have a broody so she can do all the work!
