JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I would love to have a broody hatching machine!!! Anything has to be better than my winter hatch rates!!! Probably one of my silkies in the future not a good laying machine. Not that any of mine are laying yet...my oldest are around 4 months EE. Can't wait!

Does anyone of you set soiled eggs????

I slipped one of my broodies in to my breeding pen cause those silly d'Uccles won't brood and the eggs were freezing before I could collect them. She is my trusty egg protector. She's so good and so nice that last year, I hatched some of the incidental offspring that came from having her in that pen because I wanted more hens like her. Sticky and Chunk aren't quite as nice as their mommy, but that's cause their daddy is a d'Uccle which makes him kinda flighty. But they sure are lookers - some of the prettiest birds in my flock. I'm gonna try to keep them when I sell down the mixed flock this spring. DH won't notice right ?

Oh yeah, and I totally set soiled eggs sometimes.

I have been incubating shipped eggs, and some of them have been soiled.

Thanks for the soiled egg assurance! I will get to weighing & marking. I am going to be squeezing the Hovabator to max capacity! Let's see what will fit! Silkies are tiny but Orpingtons are big. I had about 30 that were soiled.

@jbenson love those chicks! So cute! I would def keep your hen if she's a good broody!

Sooo, I kept turning my incubator "down" and being confused as to why the temp kept going up. I just discovered that I had been turning the dial the wrong way! That would be just perfect, cook my poor little eggies on the first day!

They might have gotten as high as 104, but I'm crossing my fingers that they weren't at that temp for very long.

Oh nooooo! I hope they are forgiving on the first day! Keeping my finger crossed for you!

The answer is 61...61 eggs fit into my Hovabator...and they said 50 would fit~ LOL
I just added 22 silkies, 2 Crele, 2 Buff and a Jubilee Orpington. Fingers crossed on the poopy eggs!
