JANUARY 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I put an ear of corn into the brooder with the 26 TJ chicks.  At first they all ran to the other side of the brooder in terror.  I came back 5 minutes later and -- OMG!! -- they were like little piranha.  The thing was stripped clean in no time flat.  Guess they figured that one out....
Lol

I feel just aweful...I went to check the eggs because no one has hatched since yesterday afternoon...So, I broke into the air cell of one egg and it was liquid.

I broke into the air cell of the next one and the shell just cracked in my hand and blood started pouring and chirping...c'mon...totally killed this poor chick. Day 24 here. I feel aweful.

So, I took the remaining 6 and put them in the brinsea mini and we will see what happens.

Don't feel bad. Chances are that if it was still that bloody at day 24, it wasn't properly developed anyway. I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but don't feel guilty about it. It would have died in the shell, anyway. I never have good luck with chicks after about day 23

Another morning with tears in my eyes. You know how you just get that feeling that when you wake up you will never see your chick again??? Yup. I think I am going to rename myself to nolucklady.

So, that was my second loss of my silkie chicks...both little guys with the hip dysplasia have now passed. My last little guy was walking...although like a drunk...he could get up on that foot and get to food and water & I was hand feeding him when we would do our physical therapy. Sucks to spend so much time on a little guy just to lose him anyhow.

I lost the orp that was glued into his shell too. He would not take any food or water...never did.

So, from that batch...I killed one in the egg. Lost two who had walking problems and the last guy had pip, fully zipped but was glued in and he passed in 2 days.

Well, onward!

I am Sorry! It happens sometimes with hatching. I hate it but I have learned its best to Cull the ones that need it----I look at it as I am keeping them from suffering. Hatch some more!!

Keep your fingers crossed because I have 185 eggs in lock-down---hatching now----due Today.
