January 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
Two eggs of 20 are left, 1 of them has not pipped externally. The remaining egg that has pipped is coming out the narrow end. Crossing my fingers! In Day 21 now. Had to cull one of the chicks right after hatching - a lot of organs were still on the outside, and there was just no way to fix that. :(

But I have 17 adorable baby chicks running around in the brooder. Cuteness!!! I'll try to upload a picture in a bit.

Update, the one that had not pipped externally died sometime in the past week. The baby was 2/3 the proper size. I did a safety hole, and saw a lot of black liquid and a few gold feathers. Just wasn't right, so I did an eggtopsy, and have no guilt for throwing it out, cause it was already dead.

Since I did a staggered hatch, I have three eggs left, one is supposed to hatch today, and one goes into lockdown today. The other enters lockdown in about six days. I plan to see if the first egg hatches today, if not I'll put the first two back into my still air incubator and clean out the NurtureRight (it's pretty nasty in the water), then put both eggs back into it for hatching and lockdown.

The 18th egg successfully made it out of the narrow end, and is drying off now. Yea for 18 babies!!!

I was hoping to have my chickens eggs in incubator at the same time as the shipped. My rooster is doing his job, but they will be hatching a day or 2 behind. I have some eggs, but I am waiting for the 2 hens I really want. And now the weather got cold here. I hope they will still lay. 11 degrees this AM. We got woke up at 4 am because coyotes were in the yard, trying to figure out how to get to our birds.

Good luck on those coyotes! Last cold snap we had I came out to at least 20+ small holes all around my open air coop/run. The fox had been working all night, but couldn't get through the 3 ft hardware cloth apron. Made me real nervous though, at least one of the holes was right at the edge. Maybe next time I'll use a 4 ft apron (I wish...)

Most of the eggs loose air cells are re-attached. I am leaving the others and checking on Monday. One egg (BO) looks like a blood ring. The rest look good. I decided to save up my hens' eggs until I get one from my avatar. I did get one from my black frizzle.
