77 horses: You’ve got your chick, Ivory. I have a feeling that chick will be a world traveler, but keep it warm at 95 degrees F 1 wk, then decrease 5 degrees each week (considering the weather). Sometimes they come out of the egg running, but often they need a lot of rest like babies, with short times up, then sleep again; they usually look stronger at the end of the day or the next. Happy trails to you!

Thanks save the favs!

Little Ivory is still a bit wobbly and can't walk very well (more like wattles and sometimes falls over lol) for some reason. Doesn't have splayed legs and her toes/feet are completely normal. I guess she's still getting the hang of walking on her own and/or she's still a bit tired.

One thing I noticed she does also is so cute! She seems to have imprinted on me as being her "mother hen"!

If I'm not near enough to her, she will start peeping like crazy. Then when she sees me, she will come wobbling/running over and will try to snuggle under my hands.

She complains when she's not getting enough attention and she likes to peck at my fingers.

Great, she's already spoiled and it's only her first day after hatching.

My first ever Chicken incubation was a total Failure, I heard the chick peeping for 2 days, and then nothing. when I opened it today, it's head was near it's feet, and the membrane seemed to be white and dry against the chick.

so I bought to new Humidity meters, they are currently in a bag with a small container of salt & water to calibrate.
Sunday the 2nd batch of eggs move from incubator to hatcher. So we will see what happens there.

I will be bleaching the hatcher tonight, and airing it tomorrow in prep for Sunday lockdown, Hatch Feb 3. I took a video of the eggtopsy. so I can at least reveiw it later. I have not posted it anywhere, and I did all 4 eggs, it appears that all had some developement, but only 2 would have hatched.....1 died about 2 weeks, it was not pretty, 1 seemed to have been almost ready, and 2 had no yolk left to absorb, but never piped....

So I have been feeding my chickens (1 roo & 34 hens) Flock Raiser pellets, Free choice Oystershell & grit, and 3 cups corn scattered in bedding.....(on cold nights, Just before bed) so I know that calicum is not the problem.

but I had trouble breaking the shell on these eggs, that were incubated.

Pandora - I had the same problem with several of my eggs. I usually don't interfer with hatches but knew my humidity had been low. I really wanted to save 4 in particular and could hear the babies peeping in the shell. The shell was super hard and the membranes just as tough. I cracked a few of those same kind of eggs for a meal that night and they were also super hard shelled. I did manage to save the four chicks, but one died overnight. The other three, you wouldn't know who they are (in fact I'm not even sure thanks to my hubby who put them in before I could mark them

)

The dried out, white membranes are due to low humidity. I still haven't eggtopsied the remaining eggs to see if they had the same issues.

I think you are wise to test your new hygrometers, I know I need to buy a new one myself.

Better luck next time to you

Well, today is hatch day and no pips seen yet from my silky and maran variety eggs. Last night I put in the 7 blue/splash rock eggs that made it to lockdown. All these are shipped eggs that I REALLY want to hatch. Not just because of the money I spent on them, but because I want to breed them for my flock. They need to make a bator stalking smilie!

Sorry for the delay. We have bad weather, and I had no computer service.
Finally, here are my 3 new babies .... Silkied Ameracaunas. I have 9 more eggs (same breed) going into lockdown tomorrow, due Wednesday!

I think my hatch is almost over.
17 chicks (13 wheaten/blue wheaten ameraucanas + 4 projects)

I candled the last two eggs...One is a late stage dud and the other I saw movement.
I piped it and there was a fully formed chick with movement. The membrane was a little dry so I wrapped it up in a damp paper towel and hope for the best. I did not rupture the membrane. We''ll see what happens...to be or not to be

This will be the little miracle baby if it does hatch.
