january hatch-a-long

Pics
I have the Janoel 12 incubator. It comes with a black tray and inserts you can set in to size it. I don't get how to put the eggs in (Sideways?) and how the heck it would turn. My batch was too big to use it anyway so I've been hand turning.

We're officially on day 19! I'm cheering SO HARD for these guys. I literally have ten pages of notes I've taken during the hatching process. It was supposed to be fun for the kids, but I've gone a bit overboard....

Booger Brain, Scream, and Contented Sigh had better hatch okay. (Booger brain comes from the first few days. I wasn't very serious about the eggs and teased them. Scream is the middle of the hatching, which is how I felt most of the time. Contented Sigh is the ending of the hatch, when I can relax for a minute) More formally known as Thing One, Thing Two and Thing Three. Hatched or not, they have names.

You can fit 3 of those little dividers in there with chicken eggs and the 3 eggs in each column, the turner works when you line up that rod that comes out from the lid into it, it slowly turns on 2 hour intervals, if you put a line in like expo marker you can see the movement after awhile, it worked really well for me.

Hope this helps! I think it works better not opening the bator for more than a few seconds so the auto turner is amazing just make sure you set the rod in the slot otherwise it won’t work. Also try and use sponges during lock down (cut them in half until they keep the humidity good) and use a small cup the rest of the time (I used the bottom of a water bottle lol)

I guess I get confused with the actual "how" way for some reason! Borrowed my kitchen eggs for modeling. Do they go in loose? Snuggle against the bars? On their side? Some people have their bars at an angle (pictured) I've no idea if that's right or not. Why are these things so hard? :p

And here's the three babies that have made it to today!

This is Sigh. It's been a perfect little egg.

These two are both of Gray Hair. He hates pictures.

And this is Booger Brain. His air cell looks strange, hoping it's okay. He's also shy about pictures.

I don't use that bator, but I would think you need to the eggs 90 degrees left or right in the picture. I am assuming tray moves back and forth (up and down in the pic). The eggs would then get rolled along their longer axis.

You want them to be more like this (these eggs must be smaller than mine because I only used 3 of the dividers) but you don’t want them to be to tight so a little wiggle room is good, your babies look good!

Ohh, that makes sense! So they're still at a bit of an up/down angle. I think that's where I got thrown off. Also you have the same humidity/temp gauge as I do! Now I don't feel so cheap. Thank you! :)

I'm almost positive I heard one of them peep inside the egg. incubator sits beside me most of the day. I don't know if I for sure heard a peep or if I'm going crazy. No rolling eggs, though. I'm finishing the brooder tonight (VERY DIY. I have a heating pad for my cat who passed. It's perfect for a DIY mama heating pad. But my kid used my chicken wire! Sourcing alternatives via Google...). If he hatches, he'll be early. Half of me hopes it WAS a peep, and half of me hopes it was just my imagination.

Goodie! Mine drove my crazy when I’d think I seen them move or peep and finally I seen a pip and then another one (which happened to be the first and the last to hatch lol) don’t open to much I opened it once on day 19 and felt a pip, freaked out and quickly closed it xD
Don’t worry if your brooder looks bad, mine was a plastic tote for a few days until I built another lol

I swear I heard peeping. It was driving me insane wondering, so I steamed up my bathroom with the shower until the humidity was the same as the incubator. I took a quick peek at the babies. No internal pipping yet. But I do have one Angry Baby. He kept moving away from the light when I got near him. It was cute! But at least I know I'm imagining things. (Babies can't peep if they haven't done an internal pip, right?)

I made a DIY brooder out of a storage container, some paper towels, some non slip cabinet foam... stuff, and a DIY baby tent out of a smaller sized heating pad, high quality fleece, and an old cookie cooling rack I managed to round up. It's small, but since I only have three babies it will hold up for a day or so.

Angry Baby is the one I can tell for SURE is alive in there. It's amazing to watch. I kind of feel like a mother. :p The other two babies are fully dark and not able to see inside. They had veins yesterday, though!
