Java Thread

Saladin, thank you for posting that article. It was very informative, well written, and very very helpful.

Your very welcome.

Monte is a good friend: knows his Javas. For the past few years Garfield Farms (in part responsible for the resurrection of the Java: them and the doctor) has been getting Javas from Monte to revitalize their own flock. He's also been trying to teach them how to breed Javas.

I just saw the coolest thing! I have a Mottled Java, and she got inside the house to say hello, and so I picked her up, noticing how red her comb/face/wattle are becoming and admiring her. I was calmly talking to her and petting her, and the area below the ear that was red, turned white. When I started moving around, it turned red again. Isn't that cool! Or does this happen to all the chickens? So cool.

For you that have javas, in reality, what size eggs have you been getting and on avg how many per week. I really like the look of the mottled javas but don't want to get into a bird that gives me real small eggs and only one or two per week.

My hens lay an egg a day, eveyday.
In deepest winter, maybe an egg each, every other day.
Their eggs are a pearly pinkish light brown, and average what would be called large to extra large.

I just took some updated Auburn Java juv. pictures
I thought I would share a few of my favs.

Did anyone see this? I am curious if this happens to just Javas or other chickens as well.

And I have a Black Java, 5 1/2 months, just started laying a week and a half ago. She lays an egg a day surprisingly, and right now they're a medium size. The Mottled Java has squatted for 2 days now so soon she'll lay. That's exciting!

I myself have never noticed anything such as you have described here, with any of my birds.
And as far as the turning color, (Javas) should be red, and unable to change color (unless I expect there is a blood flow issue?)
You are describing the ear lobe, correct?
SOP says Java combs/wattles/earlobes must be red.

Hi GoodLuckCharlie!- I have never seen this happen. But, that doesn't mean it doesn't. I do however know that when a pullet gets to laying age they go through a hormone change when getting ready to lay eggs. At this time one of the physical differences that happens is the change of earlobe color and facial skin. The ear lobe color usually starts to turn white and gets whitter as they get older (happens gradually) And the comb, wattles and facial skin turn bright red. I guess it could have been possible that you triggerd her to get flush and you experienced a color change in this pullets transitional time. How neat to have seen that! Have fun with her, it is a very exciting time to start recieving eggs from new pullets! Congrats!
