Jerk Neighor is now considered a predator!!!

I'm like this, it would be different if the OP was out of her way not caring, and not trying to contain the chickens.

The hen that was shot had strayed off - after the OP had tried to keep them up and still free range them for a bit - that one hen decided to be sneaky... I know - this happens alot with dog owners, but honestly a dog is alot easier to keep contained than a chicken. - chickens can fly, and are small and can get missed - like a cat....I cant tell you how many times the cats have slipped in or out of the house without me noticing them, or trying my darnedest to not let them...

The neighbor is the OP's brother...seeing as the OP extends the courtesy to over look the troublesome escape artist dog that the neighbor/brother doesn't have the want or care to properly chain, tie, fence, or contain (i'm sure this is as long as dog doesnt kill chickens) - then as FAMILY the same courtesy should be returned for 1 lousy chicken who poops on the porch.

Do I think the chicken should be given better treatment than the dog? By no means. A dog is a dog and a pet...UNTIL its out of its yard in MINE and after MY chickens - then it is a predator (I think I stole this from Cetawin or SpeckledHen - LOL) - once it behaves like a predator - it is treated as one.

I'm sure the OP has complained about the dog as well....

I think the biggest issue isn't the neighbor killed the chicken its that the BROTHER (family) didn't have respect or courtesy to keep their own dog contained, THEN shot the bird for an accidental escape.

but said neighbor has a dog that gets loose and goes into the OP's yard and messes around, poops, and is a nuisance...the OP hasn't called Animal control or SHOT the dog because it was HER brother...I can see why the OP thought the same courtesy would be extended to her...ALSO a dog can do a lot more damage and makes a MUCH bigger POOP than a chicken...

OP take his dog's crap out of your yard, and dump it on his porch with a note : "heres the presents your mutt left me in my yard...next time he visits, he wont be coming back home that day...don't worry I wont SHOOT him, but you can find him at Animal Control" (Or you could leave the last sentence out

Fair enough. I feel the same way there too, though. It does not matter whose animal is trespassing on whose property- it shouldn't be happening and both parties are (assuming the law says so) fully within their rights to remove the issue if the owner will not. I hate to see animals shot, though.

Just ask him to keep his dog in the yard, it will be his responsibility to do that. If he doesn't call Animal Control after you catch it on your property. He needs to build a fence like you do for your chickens.

Well if thats the case - (since its brother/sister - and the OP (sister) has let things go and been the bigger person with the brother/neighbor) then the OP should shoot his dog when he tresspasses next time.

Yes, she should.

If she wants to remain the bigger person the she needs to put up a fence and let it go.

think 4' would work? I have that available...

4' generally isn't high enough, I know mine could hop up on that even with clipped wings. But it depends on if they respect the fence. Can you put up the 4' and add some chicken wire to the top?

I use a 4' fence as a movable " day paddock" for my quarantine pen, I had 5 hens in there and two would hop/fly over it. I put deer netting over the top (cost me $8) and have not had any problems since. I think if you add a top of some sort it will be ok.

I would make sure your brother never gets fresh eggs again, that was uncalled for among family.

YOUR OWN BROTHER SHOT YOUR HEN??!!

I am so sorry!

You know what they say, "You can pick you friends, but you can't pick your family........."

Again, I am so sorry.........

Fred's Hens :

We had some hens last year that were too good at ranging. They simply went too far. We have a neighbor, Diane, over 300 yards away, who is a great neighbor. She is even a good egg customer. BUT.... she likes her yard chicken free. No poop. No digging and scratching. She has made it abundantly clear that any chicken that lingers on her property will become chicken soup, as is her absolute right. Her land. Her crock pot!!!

I take her at her word. My hens lose all their rights by leaving our property.

There has been no hens over that way in a year and there will not be. But if one should make it that far ever again, I intend to ask Diane if she'll invite us over to share the soup.

First things first, dealing with the "brother". If you are in city limits I would call the police on him for discharging a firearm in city limits. Would call the police on him regardless, of course he would call them on me as well because after I called the cops I would march straight over to his house, drag his sorry a*$ out the front door and commence to whipping the crap out of him in his own front yard.....thats just me tho. If "family" acts that way then the gloves are off.....if you want to be childish I can get childish....we can roll around in the dirt over a chicken! Then when the cops show up (you called em remember) you can say I caught him right here officer, came over to talk to him about it and he attacked me....so I defended myself.

As for Fred, did you wink at the neighbor and tell her the same goes for anything hers. I respect my neighbors and would endeavor to keep my chickens out of their yard. But for my neighbor to tell me that chickens wandering into their yard make it into the crock pot instead of telling me then I will let them know that I will extend them the same courtesy of letting them know I killed something of theirs for crossing the line instead of letting them know that their animal is on my property. My yard....my right eh.

Little phone call "hey Diane just a heads up, your dog came onto my property today....don't worry about it tho, I took care of it. How? Well I shot it of course!"

She can put up a fence, thats the right thing to do, but if the dog still gets in then it should be dealt with.

That is just wrong, just plain WRONG. You start a fight with him just so you can get HIM in trouble? And you are calling HIM childish??

The hen was on HIS property and he dealt with it the way he saw fit. Same thing most of us would do if the neighbours dog came onto our property.

Guess I'll jump in with my opinion here.

I think Cetawin and ScaredOfShadows said it best. It was WRONG for him to shoot a chicken when he lets his dog run free like that! Just WRONG! It wasn't as if OP wasn't doing anything to prevent their birds from getting onto their brother's property, which from what I am reading is more than he has done for his dog! And it's just like ScaredOfShadows said, those birds are crafty when they want something! You can't help some things and as family the brother should have been more understanding. It may have been within his rights, but that's just pathetic resorting to shooting a chicken, of all the other things he could have done!

If it were me, I'd save up and get the tallest, strongest fencing I could and put it on the ENTIRE border of the two properties. Make it as difficult as possible for ANYTHING, chicken or dog or whatever, to get to the other side of the fence. Of course, a temporary fence would have to do for now (assuming you can't already afford something like that), and if there's plenty to do on your property for your chickens, they *shouldn't* want to put the energy into flying over a 4' fence. I'd give them some extra treats around their coop to convince them it's better to stay home, too.

(I'd also probably do something with the dog just so brother gets a bit of his own medicine back at him, but I'm a bit vengeful when it comes to the lives of my birds. And no, it isn't because I'm biased toward dogs. My family has 7 dogs that are kept contained responsibly.)
