Jersey Giant (or any large breed would fit) roosting question

Quote:
According to the APA Standard of Perfection ... If they do NOT have yellow on the bottom of the feet ...
the are disqualified! I would not breed one without yellow, as far as for showing or breeding purposes.

I have been told that the ones without the yellow, were probably crossed with Austrolorps by the hatcheries.

I use tree limbs in my coops. It works well and is free, I dont know why more dont use them. My Black Jersey is big also. He has no problem with the limb. Heres my guy at 61/2 months old he is now much bigger.

Back to the original question .... I just bought 7 Jersey Giants aged 10 months. The seller had a cute little garden house as a coop. I went inside, and was horrified to see that these big ol' giants had a roost shaped like a ladder (layed horizontally) made of REBAR! Can you imagine? OMG ! I immediately bought them, and brought them home! I wasn't even concerned if they met the SOP, I just wanted them outta there! Now they have a 2x4 roost!

Oh! dont get me wrong I love these gentle giants, Any way they come! I am just going to be breeding for show quality aswell as the seperate breeding pin for my attempt to improve their giant size even more.

SORRY! didn't mean to hijack the thread.

I will be using a 2x4 on its side, myself for roosts. 2x6 is just over kill and alot more to scrape clean. As far as rebar....OMG!!! Some people have no concern for their animals comfort. That is just un exceptable! Thank you for rescueing them.

His feet are yellow on the bottom. They all look gray on the bottom because we live in a dry desert with fine-grained sands, silts and clay, so there feet are essentially coated with a thin layer of gray dust.

Around here, they ALL have gray feet regardless of true color.

Kathyinmo, rebar?!? That's nuts! That has got to be painful! Thank you for saving their poor feet. I bet they are MUCH happier on 2x4's.

Seriously, huh! That'd be a pain to keep clean though!

mstricer, He is gorgeous! I wish my guys had pretty feathers like that right now. He's all scraggly looking (broken feathers) from a lower protein feed that we were using (16% protein feed plus occasional scratch and raw veggies a few times a week). We don't give scratch often due to its poor nutritional value, but I think it was enough to kill the protein levels. We have switched to a 20% breeder pellet, which I think is MUCH better, but we have to wait for him to molt until he is all pretty again. He is a good roo though and very protective (but not aggressive)! He isn't very good at feeding the hens though. He likes to feed give them sticks.

The girls listen to the salmon Faverolle for food calls since he is gentleman...just a scaredy cat and not a good protector. The roos are good team (though my JG is definitely alpha. No fights EVER!
