Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Good morning, Giant friends! I was out yesterday & never logged on - had electric run to our new barn, and needed to be there to tell the electricians where I wanted the electrical box, lights, etc. This is a project we've been working on for over a year now, trying to do it all in cash, so it's been one thing at a time, and evrything is more expensive that we anticipate it will be. Sigh. Was REALLY hoping to have the barn completely done by this winter, but that's not going to happen. But, at least we have electric, so can build pens inside all winter.

Sounds like there are some NICE Giants out there growing out, and that folks are now making plans for 2013. Anyone care to share their plans? For me, I'll be doing a ton more hatching, but I may not be doing it until summer rather than spring, because of getting the new barn going and needing the space. I'm wanting to cocentrate on the blues, so will be planning to keep only the blues (yea, I say that now) out of the blue/black crosses. My blue cock bird is a super nice male. Crossed over the really good black hens, the blues should have fantastic lacing.

well that is great to hear .... well for us wantng to buy eggs from you!
Glad to hear your getting the barn done and hope the best for you on finishing it,
We will be building our flock back up of Jg's. ( HINT HINT) and hubby will be getting some buff wyandottes.
Im sure there will be one or two breeds added to his list. Im getting m wishard Bronze turkeys back and a few bobwhites ( for release - will go about that the right way) I just want to have some around love there calls. There ae some wild here but kinda over hunted from what I hear.
I need more jgs to beable to cull don to just the best. so that is # one for me and the some birchen marans. I hached all cockerels but 2 pullets and now just have a pair.
Build more big coops and use the smaller ones for grow out coops and swap/sale coops.
I have that itch already and fighting it til we get everything set up and all that good stuff.
Would like to show this year here too.
So will seehow that goes.

Next year should be fun to be sure! My incubators will be full, if luck has it! FULL mostly of Jersey Giants!

Sidebar: if you didn'g get your Birchen Marans from Reeves, PM me & I'll send you his contact info. He's been breeding them awhile now, and has really, really nice ones.

Here is a few pics of our small Black Giant family. They are smart birds, far smarter than our Rangers. Hope to breed them next year and build a flock. Funny now that the are old enough for the roosters to crow, they try to do it in sync with each other.I will try to get a good shot of them once we dry out form the storm.

Yep they had a Broody Buff to raise them. She was so good at taking care of them. Is it true Black Jersey Giants are not Broody and that they would crush eggs? Mine were hatched end of June so I would not be looking for eggs for a while. When do Jerseys start egg laying?

3, I've had two Giant hens go broody, and come to mind, one was a splash and one a blue. So, perhaps that's true that the blacks aren't as broody?

Mine were 30-32 weeks when they began to lay, I believe. I certainly wouldn't look for eggs until probably February, though they sometimes will kick a few out intermittently before the days become longer.
