Great Job with your wins!
Now that I'm in NC I'd (WE) would like to see some of your birds in person.( shows and such)
The pullet (hen) is very nice as well as the cock. You should be very proud!

I like your hen, NC, over the cock personally, but the cock is VERY nice as well! I'd be proud for either to be on my farm! Congrats on the placing with your pullet.

Good morning, Giant friends! I was out yesterday & never logged on - had electric run to our new barn, and needed to be there to tell the electricians where I wanted the electrical box, lights, etc. This is a project we've been working on for over a year now, trying to do it all in cash, so it's been one thing at a time, and evrything is more expensive that we anticipate it will be. Sigh. Was REALLY hoping to have the barn completely done by this winter, but that's not going to happen. But, at least we have electric, so can build pens inside all winter.

Sounds like there are some NICE Giants out there growing out, and that folks are now making plans for 2013. Anyone care to share their plans? For me, I'll be doing a ton more hatching, but I may not be doing it until summer rather than spring, because of getting the new barn going and needing the space. I'm wanting to cocentrate on the blues, so will be planning to keep only the blues (yea, I say that now) out of the blue/black crosses. My blue cock bird is a super nice male. Crossed over the really good black hens, the blues should have fantastic lacing.
My plan for this upcoming year is to increase my JG numbers of good quality birds. I am hoping to hatch 50 JG birds for my own use this year. Out of that I hope to keep 2 or 3 good hens and an additional cock. I am hoping for a few nice blue birds. Right now I have a good hen, with my current cock I am hoping for some nice babies.

I am also thinking that I might get a dozen or two eggs from others to expand on my genetic pool.

Sounds like a great plan. I'm probably going to be hatching several hundred, and keeping only the very best few. The process of growing them out until they're old enough to REALLY know how good they'll be is a long one, especially for me, having only a few years of experience with this breed. The ones that are REALLY good do seem to stick out around 18 weeks for me, but I've also had some surprises...a few pullets that I'd planned to eat but just didn't get around to it ended up maturing out VERY nicely. That now has me a bit paranoid about making decisions too soon!

I would love to follow closely with your plan, but I have a few technical difficulties with that.

First, I only have 3 hens, and with my luck on Shipped eggs, Hatching out Hundreds would be costly (Hundreds of chicks, for what I am sure would be many, many hundreds eggs).

Secondly, Growing out a few hundred takes a lot of space, which I don't know if I have (I could probably do 100-150 with the current set up).

Thirdly, and MOST importantly, I have to subscribe to the slow and consistent approach to increasing my poultry numbers in order to maintain Whole House Happiness. My Wife is amazing, but the only way I can get to hatching out 200 chicks, is to prove that I can move the extras when there is only 40 or 50. If October rolls around and there is 100+ birds on the property, the happiness level would decrease dramatically.

I have to admit I had to stare at these pictures for a while to soak up the beauty of these birds.
