Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Anyone from Kentucky breed the jersey giants? I just acquired 3 pullets and a roo, all about 6 months old. I the man I bought them from had purchased them as a group from an individual who I understand hatched them from someone in FL. These are blue and very nice, I would like to get a few more of the other colors. Any suggestions?

Sugar Sand, do let us know how you do at the show!

I've never felt like my line grew slowly...maybe "matured" slowly, but I'm always surprised when they start laying around 22-24 weeks, just like any FS chook will. Seems like they ought to be laying later since they grow so large, doesn't it?

larry - check here for info. on posting pics: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1198

Yes these are my first chickens (so much fun) and I was shocked to find them start laying right at 24 weeks in the middle of December... I guess I thought they would take longer to lay as they are slow to mature... (Our 7 month old Roo is huge...) And since we upped their feed (we feed scraps daily and let them out to range all day but didnt realize their feeder was empty for a couple of days).... we went from 4 to 7 eggs daily from our 10 hens... WOW we love these birds!

Lucky! My two girls are about the same age and are taking their sweet time to go about laying eggs. LOL That's OK with me though, that's what the leghorns are for. haha.

well, actually one of the girls out of the hatchery batch is small and lean (but black with that iridescent green sheen to her feathers) she doesnt really look like her sisters and flies up and over the fence whereas they tend to squeeze under it (theres a protective cane brake covering the hole and they go explore the back pasture that way)- anyways I suspect she is doing more of the laying ...

McMurray hatchery and Townline will both sell day old chicks. In fact mine were sent the day there were hatched from Townline. Find them online. However, Townline sells only 15 , nothing under and McMurray may have a higher number. They say the death toll is much greater with fewer chicks.

My breeder pick left side. (he is stooped some - he did not like the photo shoot.) #1 blue

Sorry it took so long to post them. JUst when I think we are getting things straight enough to be on line here more something happens. The joy of fixing up a house and building the farm.
