Cant wait Austin is taking 3 JG (1 K, 1 P, and 1 H) all black.
Austin named his cockerels ( roosters less than a yr old ) Kevin and Evan. Well Kevin has some frost bite damage on one of his points on the comb so I talked Austin into taking Evan.
Well Evan is Evil. Evan has ran all the time with the breeding flock and has never been held except for maintenance. Kevin gets held quite often. Any way I wish I would have had a video of Austin and I giving this cockerel a bath last weekend and Austin holding/messing with him every evening.

Ah the fun family time showing poultry...wouldn't change it for the world!!!!

What about run space?

I made a small chicken coop before getting the chicks (the chicks were the only ones left, plus 2 meat). So I know I am going to have to make another.

So I just noticed the background is in focus and the chicks are slightly out of focus....Go phone camera!

All chickens benefit from the most space you can give them. All the JGs I've had were in mixed flocks so I really didn't notice any difference in needs but I always err on the side of more space.
Cutting it close is asking for trouble.

I have plans to make 2 20X20 runs. This way I can switch them between them and give a chance for the grass to grow.

But I am stuck on the coop design.

I got them March 12th, so 4 1/2 weeks old. That is what I came up with too... Just my luck I would get roos. I wanted them for eggs lol.

Usually having combs that early indicates a roo. The third one may go either way. Leg circumference is also a good indicator. Either way I love this breed, don't you?

I have an electric wire too but not sure if the renter has it on. However my front yard is open and that's where the dogs came in.. Quite a ways around the fences from their home in back of me. And the neighbor has a horse farm that has elec wire. The older dog went over my fence and theirs to get home. I know there is a foot high elec fence that I am told even keeps bears away! I shouldn't have to go to that expense or confine my chickens to a small quarter. I am dealing with the owner of the dogs and he will get rid of them or one of the neighbors will shoot them. At least I'm getting acquainted with some of my neighbors I never knew before.
I have found that Townline Hatchery in Mi has adult birds for sale. They turn their flock of breeders over at 1 year and sell them off, so if anyone is looking for a particular breed, they might find them there. They must pick them up and must buy at least 25. It's the only place I have seen that sells adult birds that I want. It's only a couple of hours away from me and the neighbor will have to get them!

I want to add that I am afraid for any small children in the area. They could be mauled quite badly or even killed by a dog like this.

I think I'd mentioned that I had several Black Giant eggs I was incubating from a breeder in NE Ohio. He took the BB at a very large show down in Ohio last fall, and I was VERY impressed with that K. He was not the biggest Giant of all of them shown, but had the very best type. I'm pretty excited to watch them grow out. Hatch day was yesterday; it wasn't a fantastic hatch (11 hatched out of 27 eggs), but you just never know how they'll turn out. Still, I'm pleased as punch to have 11 of them, and hoping one or two will be exhibition quality that I can add to my line to increase the vitality of the bloodlines.
Wynette,

I think we need pictures... hehehehe
