Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Welcome thundress!! I'm getting a dozen from Wynette and another dozen from Maria Hall the first week of May!

Btw, I want to post some pictures of Bobbi's hatch, but I can't figure it out. Also can't figure out that little icon thingie (avatar?) in the upper left-hand corner. Anyone got any ideas?

I could use a little expertise. I have a JG chick with a red, puffy eye that is swollen shut. The other eye looks kind of inflamed, but not as bad as the first eye. I had a duck arrive with crusty eyes from a hatchery that has been sharing the same box with Bobbi's JG chicks. I am thinking this was a huge mistake??? Does anyone have any ideas on treatment, or what I should do from here?

thundress, I'm so sorry you're having an eye issue! I've not had any eye issues thus far (knock wood!) except once, I had a chick hatch that's eyes were shut. I waited til she was dry/fluffed out, then applied a warm water compress one at a time & sort of gently pried them open - haven't had a problem with her since then. Your issue sounds like it's bacterial since it sounds swollen...you might do a search on BYC (see the blue bar above? Click on "search" and you can specify the criteria and section you wish to search in) - I bet you'll find there are lots of threads that might help...BEST of luck!

And fifelakelooper, do you sell hatching eggs? Does anyone know where to get some whites? And I panicked and went out and got antibiotics for my chicks... It looks like it's spreading from the ducks to the chicks. Gah!!

I am sooooo not going to order from a hatchery ever again. The experience of hatching out my own poultry has been 100x as satisfying as opening a box, seeing 2 dead ducks in the bottom, and having 3 more die over the next 24 hours. The hatchery told me that the reason they were dying was that the box was stuck on a truck that sat in the baking desert with mechanical problems for over 24 hours, but all the dead ones had crusty eyes, so I'm beginning to wonder...

I have 3 Jersey girls that I bought locally from someone wanting to breed birds more for meat. She didn't realize they were so slow to grow. I just wanted them because they sounded fascinating as a breed and I really seem to have an affinity for heavy breeds. The girls are Summer, Autumn, and Sunny. Sunny seems to be the boss. I really enjoy watching them in the yard. They will lay down together in the grass and someone will get uncomfortable from the breeze and get up, poke her sister, and then walk over her to make her scoot over. It's not mean or anything, just really 3 stooges like. Since I didn't raise them from babies it's taking longer for them to get used to me but they are very shy and timid. They don't freak out when I walk near, just start scooting off in case I'm a predator. They seem to be pretty smart too. Sunny was chased by my dog and she disappeared. We thought she was a goner, but she showed up the next day under the coop with nary a scratch on her. Now they stick a bit closer to the coop and we got rid of the dog.

They are 9 weeks old now and I love them

The gal had 5 of them, I took 3 and my friend took 2. She named hers Snooki and Jenni lol.

And good news... My chicks from Bobbi are taking a turn for the better, though I lost one last night. At least I learned something from all this: Never mix new birds from different sources. Quarantine first, and NEVER put sick animals with healthy ones. Siiiigh... Well, at least I know for next time.

Sorry...no I don't. Just getting started on this breed myself. On the BYC auction site I've seen Pride and Joy (I think is their BYC name...not sure) so you could check with them. I don't know the quality of any breeder other than Wynette and Maria Hall because they are the two I researched. Check to see what comments others post on the auction sites, etc. I KNOW it seems to be hard to locate Jersey Giant breeders. Somewhere on here I have found the whites you are looking for but I can't remember where/who.

Sorry.
That is a shame about the eye problem you have started from the ducks. Hope it clears up quickly.
