Jersey Giants thread for pictures and discussion

Mine aren't in lay let either. The only thing that happened was my 4 yr old JG (almost 5) layed one egg this month... and hasn't layed at all for the past week..

JGFolk - it's been such an odd year weather wise for most of us in the U.S. - that's likely why the lay schedule is a bit off kilter. I had some of my Marans begin laying in mid-December, like they normally will start (but usually they don't start until mid-February), and then after a couple of weeks, stopped completely. Saw my first egg yesterday, so the Giants shouldn't be far behind!

Thanks! I have been to that site, and already have that article (and all the others...haha) downloaded. That article claimed that the whites were recessive, but I know that with some other breeds, both dominant and recessive whites exist, and thought that perhaps in this country (the author of that article was somewhere in Europe, I think...), there might be both versions owing to the fact that they originated here, and the Black brothers may have simply bred together ANY version of white.

The article didn't really touch on what I was wondering, as the author was breeding back to whites to increase their genepool. And considering the rarity of the whites where he was, the likelihood of something being hidden there would be diminished.

I think it might be interesting to see if anything pops up from an F1 X F1 breeding. If anyone is setting out to improve their whites by outcrossing to blacks, consider giving it a try. You might be the first with a new color in Jersey Giants (didn't the blues originate from a white flock?). And if not, you'll at least be getting some new blood into the whites.

my Jersey Giant rooster pecked me today, I was hand feeding him because he's usually pushed off the scratch and other goodies I toss, so to make sure he gets some I throw some his way at the same time I throw a large amount toward the biggest group of hens. today I squatted down and held my hand out on the side where he was so the hens couldn't see it. He was eating it just fine when all of a sudden he turned sideways and hauled back and pecked me. He broke the skin on my wrist. He's never done this before and I'm conserned because people ask if they can bring kids and grandkids out to see my chickens. I don't want kids getting hurt. I would expect this from my buff roo because he's the dominant one.
Is he getting frustrated because he's not being allowed to mate with the hens. they always put up a fuss when he tries and the buff comes running over and runs him off. Im concerned.

Its the roo who must call the hens for food and he don't like that you give the food at his hens.

I think it goes without saying (but I'm saying it anyway) that when you get offspring from a Black split to White X Black split to White breeding, pics will be required.
