Chapter 8
"What happened???" James Bond, now a very handsome rooster, demanded.
"They're, they're_" Wendy the Silver Laced Wyandotte stuttered. James rushed over to coop, and was stunned at what he saw. Since neither of the two could speak, so Jesse dashed over there. On the floor laid Sherlock Holmes and three of the four Silver Laced Wyandottes, sleeping, forever. Jesse couldn't believe her eyes. Sherlock had been her favorite.
"Maple, I don't understand! Why did they die?" Jesse questioned with her eyes full of dark, blue tears.
"I'm so sorry, Jesse. It was probably the heat," she answered. The sisters hugged and cried together.
"You won't leave me, will you, Maple?"
"No," she answered, "I will never leave you." Jesse felt a little better, and ran over to take a dust bath while the bathing area was still opened.
But the bad thoughts kept running through her head.
If they died, she thought, anyone could die from this heat; even Maple. Tears came to her eyes again. No, she reassured herself, Maple said she wouldn't leave me. And she wouldn't ever break her promise.
The heat wouldn't let up. It was getting hotter and hotter by the days. The flock was forced to pant all, day, long. Jesse's small jaws eventually became sore, so she decided that a drink of water would help. She trudged over to the waterer and forced her beak into the water. The humans started having to fill the 5 gallon waterer up everyday since it was evaporating so fast. After a few days, an automatic waterer was installed, so there was plenty for all. The human left for a week who always took care of them. Now these big, and TALL humans took care of them.
"This will not due," Jesse finally announced. She went over to the human to peck her. But she suddenly had visions of Sherlock and the Wyandotte sisters. Before they died, when they died. It was so unexpected. She became very upset and nestled up against the humans leg and foot. The human leaned down and gave Jesse some nice and soothing strokes on her beautiful, soft and barred feathers. Then she remembered the conversation with Maple, "No, I will never leave you. Never leave you. Never leave youuu..." Jesse became dizzy and fell asleep. She woke up to seeing her normal human with the fluffy and fun-to-try-to-eat hair; and she was laying on the ground. Maple was sleeping next to her. When Jesse stirred, Maple only laid still.
She must be really tired, she thought. Jesse got up and walked away. But when she came back to her sleeping area, Maple was still there. Hmmmm, she thought, sleeping beauty I suppose. Jesse laid back down and fell asleep.
