Jinxed myself, actual missing duck, at least 1 injured. Any help / advice appreciated.

My girl is wheezing and has bone exposed, I’m not confident she will make it :( I will leave for vet in 10 minutes

Do not give up hope. My son had three pekins savaged by husky dogs that scaled his fence to the back yard. A neighbor alerted us. I got there first and 3 little fluffies were lying motionless in a row with blood everywhere. I took them home in a cardboard box and pet carrier and washed their wounds under the tap in my bathroom, lying them into the water in the basin. All three were stimulated by the luke warm water and went from stiff to relaxed. I washed out wounds and pulled skin flaps back into place. I sprayed the wounds with Kote Blue my preferred antiseptic but Betadine works too. Placed a gauze dressing over and held it in place with Vetwrap.

I kept them quiet and in dim light in individual pet carriers stacked in my bath. They only had oral rehydration solution with rooster booster added for 24 hours: initially giving 2 mls at a time using a long thin plastic syringe down the side of their throat. They were sitting up by the second day, and so they got about 10 minutes supervised swimming in luke warm water in the bath, before being towel dried and offered pellets and mealie worms to eat. They ate some. They remained secluded in individual pet carriers with only supervised time swimming -- wearing newborn sized baby t-shirts over the vet wrap to stop them getting to their dressings. I had to put a knot in the neck openings to reduce the size

One duck had puncture wounds over the spine and the first day didn't move so I feared the dog's teeth had entered the spine, but she started moving the next day and was ready to go back to the flock on day 7. One had the side of her chest exposed. But did not get a wound infection as the irrigation under the tap was effective. She was staying out of her carrier in the bath for the second week. The drake had a chest wound with ribs exposed and I think the dog's teeth penetrated the chest cavity but did not puncture the lungs as there was bubbling sound initially but no blood or mucus came up through the bill. He too was out living in the bath for week 2. The pair got supervised swimming 2x or 3x a day and were ready to go back to the flock on day 14.

I cannot remember whether I gave antibiotics, but I probably did. I keep a stock in my first aid kit purchased from allbirdproducts.com . No vets in my county will see domestic or feral ducks.

Good luck @KathiQuacks, keep us updated

Blanca vet update. She made it through surgery and is waking up. Unfortunately, it looks like her crop was torn :hmm but they were able to suture it shut. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if she’ll be able to eat and the wound doesn’t get infected.
I just read your update posted while I was tapping away on my cellphone. So glad to know you have a vet who would see her and operate. I hope the vet prescribed antibiotics. I do recommend oral rehydration solution and rooster booster while injured ducks are convalescing. They need extra energy to heal. Keep her calm and warm for at least 5 days, while her wound heals. Pet carriers are great as emergency beds but if you don't have one, a carboard box or plastic tote will work

Nothing to update about Blanca yet. I’m hoping no news is good news?

Peppermint’s bill and back look alright this morning. I have noticed though that she has a slight wheeze in her breathing and rasp to her voice. Any ideas why?
Could she have some blood in her airways? My duck who survived an attack and had injury to his head had some breathing issues because he had a lot of blood in his nose. Maybe your vet can prescribe antibiotics for peppermint too. I gave mine antibiotic

Gosh, everything is happening today. I got a call a few hours ago that Blanca is doing well and can be picked up, and as I was heading out, one of my alpacas had a baby in the freezing cold. I’m not even certain who the mama is yet, no one was claiming her. I grabbed the baby and took her with me to the vet!!!

Blanca is clearly better. Still a long ways to go of course, but she’s much more alert, walking around. She even laid an egg over night??!
She’s at home now in my bathtub and has drank some warm electrolyte water. I have 2 medications to give her and if all goes well, in a week or two I can bring her back to the vet to remove her stitches.
