J's 2018 chicks!
Ten days ago twenty-five mixed breed chicks came into the world. This story started months ago when something horrific happened. My standard sized flock was destroyed by an unknown Predator, since then I've started over. The old coop has been torn down and the construction of the new, safer, coop has started.

Around the time of the demolition of the old coop I started searching for ways to build up my flock again. Should I get full grown chickens? Or maybe Pullets? Chicks? Hatching eggs? All are good options, I've gotten grown hens, Pullets and chicks from various sources before and I've hatched eggs from my own flock too. I decided to get eggs to hatch, but from where? I live in the middle of the woods about an hour from the nearest large city and not alot of people have chickens around me, so getting local eggs would be quite difficult.

I thought about getting shipped eggs, I looked on BYC's Buy/Sell/Trade forum. I didn't find anyone close enough to me to be comfortable with shipping the eggs. Same thing happen on ebay, not close enough and most where not particularly trustworthy. I've never incubated shipped eggs so I started looking closer to home, again middle of nowhere and not alot of chicken people left me with few options. Off to facebook I go! I have a few chicken groups on Facebook, but none where local. I found a group specific to my part of Florida and joined. Within minutes I found just what I was looking for!

The woman I bought the eggs from is quite the enabler, I bought two dozen eggs and received 29. I also picked up some muscovy ducklings and bantam cochin chicks from her. Later on I also got three adult muscovies when I was supposed to only get three. See! She's an enabler!

She has a variety of breeds, buff and wheaten Americanas and breeds that come from them, EEs and OEs. She also has speckled sussex, marans, red sexlink, leghorn, naked neck, and salmon Faverolles. The chicks can be a mix of any of these breeds.

Here are the fist pictures of them fluffed up.

J's 2018 chicks!

Not much happened between day one and three, but I still had to take pictures of the cute little babies. At day three I could really start seeing the difference between some of the chicks. Most of the black chicks were, and still are, hard to tell apart. I also notice distinct personally traits in the first few days.

Day three

Fluff and feathers coming through!

Yes, 25 out of 29. One was clear, two quit early and one quit some time after lockdown. Pretty good for a Farm-Innovators incubator!

I think just about anyone would be pleased with your hatch rate. I've never tried hatching myself (maybe some day) but it always looks very rewarding to me when those little guys (or gals, lol) make their appearance!

J'so 2018 chicks!
I'm a bit behind on posting at the moment, so I'm starting off on day eleven.
Sandshoes and Grandad
hshsiwneksshbsbskwlwiahs Day eleven was the first time the chicks have ever gone outside. I have an old plastic tote that I filled with sand out of my yard. The chicks didn't know what to do with themselves at first! They jumped up on my arms just to get away from the sand.:lau That soon changed when they realized they could eat the stuff under their feet! The chicks then had a blast playing chicken football with a leaf and twigs.
I didn't get any pictures of the football but I did get some of the little wusses when they didn't like the sand.

I have some more pictures from this weekend that I'll post when I can. Seeing as a hurricane is coming though Florida I don't know when that will be. I'm in central florida so hopefully it won't be to bad here.

P.s If you caught the pop culture reference I love you!
