July 2017 Hatchalong

Whoops I wasn't finished. 9 of those made it to lockdown and all hatched. 9 chicks for $40 is about $4.50 each, which seems a good price.

I think I don't buy super expensive eggs again. They did give me a$5 credit toward a future purchase. (Slow clap)

I also ordered some chicks. So there are 25 baby chicks in the basement. When we started this 3 months ago, my husband thought 6 was too many... #chickenmath

Funny how that happens (chicken math).

I spent way too much money on shipped eggs last year and those that I did hatch I didn't even end up keeping! I still don't know if I'll keep the ones I just hatched lol. I am getting to where I am finally very happy with what I have, in terms of looks (feathers and eggs) and personality. We will be moving in about a year and I'm hoping to take them with me. DH says I can just rebuild my flock but I have some favorites that I would be heart broken to lose. Plus it is not as cheap and easy as he thinks, between finding breeds/varieties, and sexing, and losses. Sigh.

One of the chicks died today. 4 days old, they all seemed to be eating and drinking fine. I clean the brooder 2x per day and no one has loose stool. Not sure what happened. :(

Have you seen each one drink and eat? And checked backsides?

I have been checking backsides. I'm not sure if each one ate and drank, it is difficult to tell then apart. Now I feel I'm just waiting in dread.

We're in lockdown as of last night (Sun). Out of 14 shipped eggs, only one little tweeter is in there. I have a second egg that was moving a few days ago, but haven't noticed anything since. It's in there, too, just in case. So, we'll have one little duckie to add to the other big ones, eventually. I'm building a different incubator after this.

I saw movement in most of my shipped bielefelder eggs tonight. Very exciting several have bad saddle shaped air cells so we will see what happens as we get closer with them. I will be locking down my next hatch on thursday, at the same time I will move the 2 batches that have more time into the new bator.

I was talking to my fiancé while I was turning the eggs around (so that I could see them better from the incubator windows), and most of them started actually moving the egg around when they heard my voice :love I'm so tickled. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Its like they know their momma lol

Ok....I'm done for the rest of the year. I checked the egg last night, and saw the baby pecking away, I'm guessing to try and pip internally. I could see the membrane moving with its bill. This morning, I checked on it, and no movement. Temps were at 99 to 100, humidity was at 60 m/l. Soooo, I started opening it up around the air cell, and noticed the membrane was white, and drawn in on the poor little thing. A lot of goo around its nares, too.

So, that's that. If I hatch any out in the next month, I'm afraid they won't be big enough to put out with the other ducks come cold weather time. We only have the one duck house. Trying either ducklings, and/or a totally different incubator in the spring.

Aww total bummer :(
