They are so cute! I have to ask, because I am not up on all the things used for bedding, I use the chips..but is that grass hay? or just hay? I know, silly question..

It looks comfy cozy for the chicks though. Maybe I'll be getting some of it, when I find out what it is.

LOL all i know is that its hay ^_^ we buy it from the guy we get our feed from every month and what i do is i line the bottom of the tub brooder with newspaper and then pine shavings you use for rabbits and hamsters and then put hay on the very top it seems to cut down on the smell of the waste since the shavings and paper is soaking up the waste but around the 4th and 5th day it smells but by that time i have already moved them out and to the brooder coop outside and cleaned it out and repeating the bedding process for the next hatch ^_^

I think my mama hen is sitting on 6 duds. How would I know? Today is day 21...I see no signs of life, and mama keeps getting off the nest. Does she know that they are not good eggs? She's been kicking a lot of eggs out (we started with 20 and only two of all of the eggs showed any signs of developing) and now we're down to 6 eggs. But I don't hear anything and when I tapped, did not get any answer. And I tried the smell test, but due to so many other eggs breaking, they all smell pretty icky. What do I do? If they are all duds, will mama know and stop sitting? She had very sad eyes today, like she knows...Is there any hope?

Aww, sad eyes? I think the best thing would be to candle. If they are smelly, be careful though. Do you have a good candler? Or just a strong flash light could do. If the eggs are dark eggs, like marans, it may be hard to tell..only time will tell sometimes. I feel so sorry for the mama.

I would watch her for a while if you can't quite tell by candling.
Anyone else..suggestions..experience with this?

awwww sad eyes.. the poor thing. I had a hen sit for 5 weeks and all the eggs were no good. She finally got off them and gave up. She had to go back to being the lowest on the pecking order. She seemed sad to me too. Poor thing. All that work and no babies.

My little noise maker finally pipped. At least I think that's the one I was hearing. "Hoping" that was the one I was hearing. Haven't heard it peep since..guess it's resting after all that hard work.

I am coming in kinda late on this one...but I have 13 eggs in the bator due to hatch tomorrow, and already have 5 or 6 peeping...yea! they are mailed eggs from Garry farms, she did a terrific job packing them and the PO didn't break any. I bought the Black split to lavender Orpingtons from them. I need a Black roo for my Lavender project. I have a Lavender Roo and 4 beautiful hens.......so here we go...I'll post pictures of what hatch....

Welcome Charm! Mine are due tomorrow, but I'm here to say that one of my mahogany reds are here..my little noisy one has come into the world. That was fast after I thought I noticed it had started to zip. I have one more pipped, and then the other three. Remember I only had 5 go into lockdown because of the scrunched box that came through the mail. My first time only having so few in lockdown, even though mailed.

Go to page 2 for those that haven't seen the box. Then the eggs. Just because the eggs looked good, I had a feeling I wasn't going to have a very good hatch, those eggs went through a rough time getting here.

I have a chicky!!!
