I'm bawling like a baby.

Got out to open the coop and let the girls out at 5:45 this morning.
I HAVE TWO CHICKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could hardly believe it at first, I just leaned over the nest staring. Then I got choked up.
They're real. Real chicks. Boo-hoo hoo hoo, I'm so happy!

Silkie had gone out in the run to eat a bit of the morning treat but came rushing back and leapt upon them. I was afraid she'd squash them. I barely had time to remove the empty shells. I could see two more were pipping. One hatchling is a pale gray Silkie, the other a slightly damp Maran. Oh, oh, oh, oh, they're so very tiny.

I realize now what ya'all have been talking about. It's such a miracle. I've kept chickens for years - but never had chicks hatch out, we never had a rooster nor a broody hen! They're real chicks. They're real chicks. I can hardly grasp it. They came out of eggs. I don't even care if you think I'm nutso. They're real chicks!

I'm gonna go wipe my eyes and blow my nose and TRY to leave her alone.

Oh my goodness, you gave me goosebumps just reading your post! Yes, no matter how many times I hatch my babies, I have to stop a min..and thank the Lord for the miracle of life..it is truly a miracle.

Congrats...second mama.

I am sooo waiting for one of my hens to go broody so I can have this experience. I have a bantam cochin. I hear that cochin's go broody, and to top that off, it's a bantam, and they go broody often. So, when she is old enough to start laying, I will be watching for her to start staying on the nest, or, my Nankin or my two D'Uccles! I want a broody hen!

Thanks for sharing the picture. If anymore hatch and you get a glimpse while mom is off...get more pics. Or, what makes a really cute picture is, when some are peeking out of mama hens feathers..in other words, just carry the camera out with you every time you go out!!

Got a call at work this afternoon saying " you have chicks hatching." WhAT????
I really wasn't giving this hatch much chance but there are 2 blue eggs out and one marans so I don't have to worry about a lone chick. I really like the egg carton hatching. I am using egg flats, not cartons. I tore away the bottoms of the cups and also the tops off between the cups to allow air flow. In this very early evaluation, I can see the chick's toes grasp well on the rough crate cardboard and the eggs still in the cups aren't jostled much as the chicks climb all over.

I've thought about trying the egg carton as I said before..maybe next time, and I'm thinking the flats are a good way to go. Hmm, maybe with my barnyard mixes coming up. They are due to hatch the first of Aug. I'll be watching to see how well yours do.

Do you have pics of this? just wondering how much to leave.

I have a crazy mix of black silky (rooster) and BO, BA, RIR, WL (hens) due on the 28th/29th- so we'll see what these chicks will look like. My sweet BA is sitting on them, and unfortunately we've lost quite a few eggs. She started out with 20 (I know, way too many) and now has 11. She kicked 5 eggs out of the nest yesterday. One was a fully developed little chick, but there was a crack in the shell...so sad to have to bury such a cute little baby. I moved mama and eggs to a quiet little extra secure kennel away from the others, as I suspect that I could suffer some losses, based on the other hens' behavior toward the mama. I know bators do lockdown for the last few days- do you lockdown broodies too? Her kennel gives her some room to get up and move around and eat...but not a lot...and I'm not sure if the other hens will bug her if I open the kennel to the run.

So any guesses how much black silky the babies will have? I'm so excited for my first batch of little miracles!!!
