Once they are through the air cell, it can be a couple days before they actually pip. If you can hear chirping, they've pipped internally and they should be getting ready to pip externally. What day of incubation are they on?

As for my own.... Lockdown starts tonight and I am toooooo excited. I am taking June's hatch out to the farm Saturday to make room for the Sunday hatch. June's hatch is going to be soooo mad at being taken out to the farm, they are really big babies overnights. Last night they were all downstairs, SCREAMING AND SCREAMING.... I thought they would stop after a little while but it was 2am and the cats and dog were freaking out so I got out of my nice warm bed, trucked downstairs (they are three inches tall, how do they have such loud little lungs?!), pulled all four of them out of the brooder, and laid down with them on the couch. They all instantly shut up, cuddled up to me, and went to sleep. They made cute little sleeping trills, so I forgave them.

Spoiled. Rotten. Brats.

...But I secretly hope the next 3 are as sweet.

To all EGG-PERTS!! Questions,

Is it safe to put bantam eggs under a standard hen to set? and is there a cut off date when you can put eggs under a hen? I mean if you are removing eggs from her and she has been broody for almost 2 weeks, could you then put some good eggs under her? would she then from there go the full time? or does her internal clock start when she went broody?

From what I understand, broodies will sit on eggs until about a day after the first chick hatches (and then abandon all other eggs, whether they are still alive or not, because she assumes they will not make it). It doesn't seem to matter if she's been sitting on eggs for 2 weeks and you replace them with eggs that need sitting on for 3 more weeks, or if you take eggs she's been sitting on for a day and replace them with eggs that will hatch in 2 days. Or take her eggs and replace them with duck or turkey or whatever else kind of egg. Or even if you let her sit on eggs for a couple days (or golf balls or anything small and white and somewhat round) and then replace it with chicks in the middle of the night. Most of the time, I hear that they just don't care as long as they get to sit and then have chicks.
