I laugh when people say I live in Sunny California. LOL

I grew up in the SF Bay Area in Oakland. Moved to Union City when I was 22 until a year and a half ago when we moved to Modesto. If you don't like the weather in the Bay Area just wait 15 minutes. It'll change! Nice little breeze off the Bay and I was running for a coat. LOL Family would come to visit and no matter what I said, they would wear shorts to San Francisco. They come back freezing in August.

Modesto gets HOT! We had some bad days last week and week before and this week it's slightly cooler and yesterday was not too bad, but I still lost my favorite Game hen and one of the roos that I was going to use for breeding. I had just taken fresh ice water out 15 minutes before and they were fine. My roo was one of my 5 FBCMs and the one I carried around like my little Poodle, so I cried like a baby. Just got back from the feedstore where I bought vitamine and electrolyte packages. Went and mixed that into their water, so hopefully I won't have any more casualtiies. Besides what I think was a hawk attack on my Game roo, I've never lost any birds before. I've given some up, but this is hard to deal with.

If I can get some good fertilization from my FBCMs I would trade you for some Cuckoos. They were my first type of Marans and I love them. Maybe we could even get the Egg Train to move through the state for us! Then we wouldn't have to worry about the PO playing kickball with them.

I have nice lines on my FBCMs so if you want to start those too hI'd be happy to do this.

So far, out of 29 eggs, have 5 keets - all are early (over 4 days early!) and there are more pipping and rocking. I think maybe some of these started incubating before shipment maybe. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the rest!

I lived there for 18 years and it's cool compared to Fresno...my friends were always amazed when I came to visit in the summer and I had a sweatshirt in my car I told them after dark it was cool and sometimes foggy though baby fog compared to their winter fog....trading sounds like fun when the weather cools down some.

What sweet babies! I have to modify my "nest." I candled last night and Mama is sitting on 8 fertilized eggs. Two I couldn't find anything on, and then, scratching my head, I turned them over and over, looking for the penciled "X" I made on the big ends of all the eggs she was sitting on. Those two had no "X" on them! Doh. That stinker BLRW...I think they were HERS! No wonder she's been co-sitting with Mama! I pulled them and cracked them open, just to see. One was maybe a few days incubated (no blood yet), the other just had a fertile spot but nothing more. Maybe they weren't fertile. They were small pink ones, anyway, and I am trying to hatch big egg-layers, not little!

Crazy chickens. Today is Day 11...Day 21 will be July 21st! We'll see...
