MY BF just called and I have 2 pips and one thats rockin and rollin!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!

One question though, he said it kind of stinks so I'm thinking one egg might have gone bad... I'm pretty sure it was the one I candled, thought it had failed, but decided to leave in. I didn't notice a smell this morning when I left for work so I don't know if there's actually a bad one or not. If there is how do i get it out of there w/o shrink wrapping my other babies? Should I leave it for the next 3 days or do I risk having it explode and ruin the rest of my hatch?

I hope I didn't really screw up on this one because I just realized I didn't mark it so I don't even know which one it is... any tips on locating it quickly or keeping the other babies safe if I have to get it out of there?

SweetMotherOfMars- the double yolker was from the local farmer. I had to help it out, as it hadn't made progress for hours, and wasn't peeping very often. It was very week last night, not walking or lifting its head. We thought it would be a gonner by the morning (especially because of its suicidal tendencies- laying in the water, trying to jump out of my arms).
However, this morning it looked quite a bit better, although you can still see it is less vigorous than the others. We vaccinated them all for meriks today, including the runty one, so I'm keeping a close eye!

jettgirl- I don't know how to help you in locating the bad egg, but I know that hatching chicks can also cause a bad smell!
I opened my incubator a few times during the hatch and nobody was shrink wrapped. I'd say if you open it as little as possible, for the least amount of time as possible, you should be fine.
During my hatch, chicks were hatching every few hours, and they would walk around and knock the other eggs around. So I opened the incubator about 3 times each day just to remove those troublemaking newborns and stop them from disrupting the other eggs too much. Everybody got out of their shells ok

Thanks Gee Vee! hopefully it's just new chick smell. He may not know the difference but I think I will because I already had to pull one that didn't develop... I don't think I'll forget that smell anytime soon

If it wasn't a bad enough smell that he decided to hunt for it himself, it was probably new chick smell. I know *I* thought something had gone wrong the first time I smelled that...... until I smelled one that ACTUALLY went wrong! Good luck!

Well, she's on poly vi sol (w/o iron) now and I'm hoping I hadn't simply waited too long to try and help her out. She seems very weak and I don't think I'd ever actually seen her eat or drink..

is it safe to attempt to feed a bit of mashed liquefied chick starter? Or should I just very carefully feed her water and only water with a dropper? Or just keep with two drops of poly a day and hope for the best.

I also have a very weak chicky and am feeding it omega milk with a dropper. We are surprised it got through the night! It is still kicking.

I am in!! Success, and they are so darn cute! Little fuzzy butts, bright shiny eyes. I got home today, and two fluffy, dried off ones were on the floor. Then two more peaked out from under Butter. I scooped the two up and stuck them by her, and she tucked them underneath! Then Sunshine, mama2 started squirming, and I briefly saw one under her. I did sneak one look under her, and I see another shelled nearly completely zipped.

I gave each hen water, and they really drank and drank, it is hot here today, and I bet they have not left the nest. Looks like they are going to be good mama's. Hope by tomorrow I can have a head count.

I was glad to hear that there is a smell, cause while it does not smell rotten, it really does not smell good. I will be glad when they move their nests and I can clean out those boxes!

Rin, you can try to give it some water as well, but I would see if you can pick up something like pedialyte from a local supercenter (like walmart, or something). It's plain electrolyte water. Chick food does not liquefy very well, but you may be able to hard-boil an egg and liquefy the yolk. Good luck with the little one
