On a side note. Murray McMurray has Saxony ducks, Appleyards and Harlequin in again! I am going to try again to get my flock through them this time.
I just told the wife that the devil just told me that Appleyards were available. Consider yourself playfully labeled such. They were for next year and now (as the world is still crazy and they are available) they are being added to cart. 🙄😁😇🦆

Okay, now that I have 10 Appleyards coming (4 females, 6 males) darn shipping costs for small orders anyway. I wanted 3 girls and 1 boy, the order of 10 costs the same. Back to the topic.

Anyone here an Appleyard owner/eater. I have questions from my wife. :) When will they lay and when should I process the five extra boys? I'll try the duck forum too, but hey I like you guys (except FortCluck ;) ).

Don't be said @FortCluck , you are my favorite.

Do I really have to wait until next spring to hatch again??? 😭😭😭😭

I mean...broody has all the chicks outside, and there’s plenty of space in my indoor brooder......ducks?! 😂😂😂

Seriously though...thinking about adding a few ducks. 😂 what breeds should I be looking at?

don’t tell my husband. 🤫
Decide what you want the ducks for (meat or eggs or decorations/pets), whether you'd like mallard type or muscovies, how large a carcass you want for meat or how prolific you need for layers...

There are reviews of many breeds of ducks on site in the reviews section. I have this book on Kindle, which has in-depth reviews of a huge number of breeds as well as a rich store of great information on caring for and raising them.

I knew it 😂

You’re crazier than I am. Buying ducks 😂 I think ducks mature way faster than chickens. I believe pekins I could butcher at 8 weeks, but I never did and kept them. Ducks start laying eggs around 17-24 weeks
1) the :( says otherwise
2) yes I am, my 80x100 garden needs ducks to tend it. :)

I butcher all my own animals (and my customers) and I know what six drakes will do to four hens. They will be processed. :) Plus I need to know if they are as good as the internet says they are.

Duck... I ate it a long time ago and it was awesome. I’m talking when I was 15. Their eggs are amazing too! Good for over easy eggs.

I only have 1 duck left, my Muscovy. She’s never leaving this farm, I love her too much. She’s what I call a clean duck breed. Pekins are messy dirty things, but super friendly.

I was looking at a greenhouse today one of those high tunnels. I’m thinking about getting it.

Your five toe feather foot one could be a salmon faverolle! Cochin don’t tend to have five toes. What color is it? Faverolle are one of my favorite!
Faverolle are one of my favorites as well. I haven't had them in a decade though. You are absolutely correct! It is white/yellow down with a black spot on its back, five toes, and feathered, yellow legs.

I found the same to also be true when I placed my order with MM. So I also have ten ducklings headed my way when I just wanted three 🤪

I added Saxony to my order to fill it out.

Appleyards dress out best around 7-8 weeks. After 10 weeks of age you get their second molt which means no weight gain - wasted feed and also pin feathers. After 12 weeks or so weight gain continues but now pin feathers are present.

17 week average for laying. I got an average of 4 eggs a week.

That is just my experience. Sorry if you knew some of it already. YMMV
