Jumbo Coturnix Quail - Learn Me A Few Things

Sometimes their poops are runny and that's normal. As long as you aren't feeding medicated feed, the protein percentage doesn't matter much. I've fed mine anything from 16-24% with no problems. I have noticed that the higher percentage makes them lay more eggs. I usually feed the 24% when I can find it.

They don't need grit unless you are feeding them food that is hard to digest, such as seeds or grasses. If you're giving them just their feed and some eggs, the grit really isn't necessary.

LilRalphieRoosmama , Thank you so very much!

Woke up this morning, and all 12 are still lively, and making the sweetest noises ever! They are just as cute as a button!! They're definetely eating well as all the feed, and eggs I had given last night were gone, and there is LOTS of poop everywhere! hahahah! More than the chickens pooped it seems.

I appreciate your time in helping me out!

No problem! Glad to help! I've found these are by far the easiest of all my birds to hatch and raise. The last hatch I did (2 weeks ago) I mis-calculated the date to stop turning and they hatched on the turning racks and fell right into the hatching box. Actually ended up with a better hatch than I usually do!

I am interested in turkeys, quail, pheasants and chickens. I just lost a baby turkey, that really bothered me.

His name was Striker, I went to the vet and got meds for him but he still died. I tried to read everything on the internet that I could about disease but like I said I still lost him. It really is addicting. I used a dropper to try and feed Striker because he stopped eating. Any way I just found this site and would like to exchange thoughts and ideas. You can buy quail egg racks on e-bay. They interchange with your GQF. Most people you buy from are really great, you get a cracker every now and again. I did any way, and told him he was a cracker, too. One quail rack holds 20 eggs. They are very easy to interchange. I love the quail because they made the most wonderful sounds.

Thanks for the Welcome! I have three blue slate turkeys. One little pheasant, who is the only hatch out of six eggs I was sent from Michigan. He is supposed to be a ring neck but he is very blond. I have two Bob white hens and ten jumbo brown quail. I started out with 25 bob whites, 8 roo's and the rest hens and 65 jumbo browns, but the dogs here run wild and killed the biggest part of them. I had to go and buy an electric fence and put around them to save them. I bought the srongest I could get. The quail make the most wonderful sound and I hate that the dogs are allowed to run around and do what ever they like. I don't want to be mean but I really love the little birds and its not right for the dogs to kill them the way they did. Its to horrible to tell the story here but please take my word for it, Dogs are vicious.
