June 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I am working on the posts! I really enjoy and find the forum to be a wealth of information, even for farmer folk.  I will be purchasing hatching eggs when i get my post count high enough. Amazed at the quality of chicks I am getting! Shipping is worth the risk, I have sold eggs in the past but never purchased for myself.  Thank you for the info!

There's quite a wealth of information on here & people willing to help! PaPaBrooder has a ton of different breed eggs he sells. There are many more by breed sellers and some with some cool projects going on!

Unfortunately, I want them all!!!

It's great seeing pictures of your chicks!  I've got a question for some of you seasoned hatchers:

I have mixed breeds hatching on June 14 & 15.  There are two bantam eggs in the June 14th batch.  All eggs are in the same incubator with an automatic turner that takes up the entire floor or the incubator.  When should I start lockdown?  Also, I've read that you shouldn't open the incubator during lockdown, but that you should take chicks out within 8 hours after they hatch.  If I have eggs hatching over 2-3 days, I can I make this work?  Thanks!

What you will find on here is that everyone has a different hatching method and you will have to see what works best for you. You may find bantams hatch a little early too.

If it was my hatch I would stop the turner and hand turn early the 15th due batch and lock them all down. Maybe 8 hours or so into where lockdown would be for the 14th hatchers...but, I incubate at 45-50% RH and hatch at 60%.

I also would not remove them until there was an ending to the hatch or a lull. Shipped chicks go two-three days without water/food as day olds because they have absorbed the yolk nutrients.

Best of luck with your hatch!

Well, the poor little duck didn't do so hot. The saddled one didn't do anything. Unfortunately, the rough ride in the mail led to their ultimate demise...

On the positive note, lockdown starts tomorrow for the next batch...Cemani, silver sebright, gold sebright, Mille fleur D'Uccle, porcelain D'Uccle and serama's.

Although about half had a Detatached air cell or partially Detatached most of them developed. I did let them rest after shipping longer than normal and out of the turners longer than I usually do. New trial and err

Happy hatching to you all!!

you got shipped eggs from McMurray?   thats a chance you take with shipped eggs unfortunately.  last year out of 24, we ended up with 6... not from a hatchery tho..

I've got 4/29 on shipped eggs developing right now and I'm stoked. Shipped eggs are impossible.

We have 6 Silkie easter egger cross hatched out of 6 put in to begin with. Half look like our white Silkie half look like their ee daddy. They all have feather feet!
6 more ee eggs waiting on day 22 with no pips, but they have crazy thick shells so I am still holding out hope.

400

:D Yep...got another one sitting, no clue how many she's sitting on, hatch date June 28 for the one on the floor and June 21 for the two in the boxes

Good morning Peep's!
I candled my eBay shipped eggs last night day 9. 5 out of the 6 royal palm turkey eggs are viable, had 1 clear that I tossed. The lady also sent me 8 bcm, I am having great difficulty candling them. I think I see 2 with blood rings, I put them back in and marked them with a question mark? I am really at a loss with them. Any advice is appreciated.

Good luck with the BCM eggs...the last ones I got were so dark I could not see a thing! I just kept smelling them. Those all hatched!

Thinking about our setup once the chicks hatch and wondering if we need to change/add anything? Maybe I need to start another thread to ask this??

You can see in my pic up a few posts, the roost and the nesting boxes, do we need to add another set of boxes for the other hens to lay in? Also, we're going to add a lip on the boxes themselves to keep the little chicks from falling out, will that be enough? Will the mamas get the chicks out okay? Worried about them falling when she takes them out :( And then after she takes them out what usually happens? Does she take them to a corner or do we need some kind of something for the mamas and littles to be in until they can all roost?

Sorry for so many questions, my mind is going a million miles an hour LOL! If it's better to ask all of this in a new thread I can for sure do that
