June 2015 Hatch A Long HAL

I've got three cemanis out now! It would have been four but the fourth started to zip, and it looks like it cut off its own air supply and suffocated :( It would have been a cull, but it's still very sad. I also have one d'uccle out and more working on it!

CONGRATS on the healthy ones! Sorry you lost one though.. that stinks.

I am anxious to get home. I had a pip in one of my shipped eggs when I left for work this am!!

Hello, everyone!

I have eggs from my Easter Eggers incubating, due to hatch in a few days.

I am throwing some quail eggs into my incubator (hopefully) tomorrow:

24 Texas A&M Quail eggs (shipped)
20+ Coturnix Quail eggs (from my own backyard)

Started 15 black copper maran eggs and 11 black sex link eggs from my own flock on June 8th ...anybody else with the same hatch day...also this is my first time hatching bcm eggs...afraid that I won't be able to candle them any suggestions

Nice job! Sorry about your lil guy. I just gave my broody two eggs due this weekend. She's been sitting on nothing for a week. This is my first time with a broody.

Yea! i had 4 shipped eggs hatch and 2 were pipped when i left this morning.

one of the chicks though.. came from an egg with a saddle air cell, so the chick was pretty cramped in there, i saw it last night after hatch, late, and this morning when I looked, its all fluffed up but its neck is sideways and it wont stay on its belly, just the side or its back. I took it out briefly to see if it would straighten and it flipped out, so I put it back.. i dont want to hurt it. i am hoping it straightens out and is just got a stiff neck from being squished...

I just candled my 27 eggs (day 13), lo and behold, several dark eggs that I didn't have a lot of optimism about are developing! Instead of 4 viable eggs it looks like I have 6 definite and two maybes! So glad I waited and didn't toss any out. Come on, little Olive Eggers!

Thinking about our setup once the chicks hatch and wondering if we need to change/add anything? Maybe I need to start another thread to ask this??

You can see in my pic up a few posts, the roost and the nesting boxes, do we need to add another set of boxes for the other hens to lay in? Also, we're going to add a lip on the boxes themselves to keep the little chicks from falling out, will that be enough? Will the mamas get the chicks out okay? Worried about them falling when she takes them out :( And then after she takes them out what usually happens? Does she take them to a corner or do we need some kind of something for the mamas and littles to be in until they can all roost?

Sorry for so many questions, my mind is going a million miles an hour LOL! If it's better to ask all of this in a new thread I can for sure do that

Thank you!!

You can also check out the ideas on the Broody Hen Thread here on BYC. This link should get you to a section with different ideas on separating broody hens to hatch their eggs:

Lots of people move their broodies to a separate little area. I put mine in a wire dog crate with 1/2" hardware cloth around the bottom to keep the chicks in when they hatched, gave her her own food and water and special nestbox....moved her at night, set her on golf balls for two days before putting eggs under her (to be sure she would like the new nest and stay broody). She did great in there and hatched 9 out of 12.

Hope this helps you out!
