June 2023 Hatch-a-long

Pics
That's how I ended up with my 4 baby ducklings a couple of weeks ago. I swore no more ducklings but then I thought about it and thought, Oh What The Heck! Luckily she only hatched out the 4. Now to find homes for the boys as at least one is whistling which means it is a boy for sure. Good luck with your decision.

I want more birds other than the five LF eggs she's sitting on. It's just that the bantams haven't been laying for over a month, and I'm apprehensive about hatching pullet eggs. I ended up taking them away and leaving her with the 5 LF eggs. The eggs were not as warm as expected, so now I'm worried she's quit! Which is weird, since the eggs are on day 9, which means she's been sitting for two weeks (she was broody for 4 extra days before I set the LF eggs)

It's normal for the eggs to cool down when mom/step-mom goes about business. So long as she doesn't straight abandon the nest it should be okay.

During a recent power outage, my incubators were off for two days. The eggs were fine.

You know what? She's way too good of a broody to switch teams now. She's still clucking, so I'm just going to assume she needs a longer break, which she absolutely deserves, as she is an absolute icon. I'm going to do egg updates as per usual. Day nine, this is what the embryos should look like. This week is the week of fast development

If you see that she has quit altogether can you incubate them? I have done that before and the eggs were cold and they still hatched. I didn't even have an incubator. Mine was a homemade one out of a foam cooler and a 40 watt bulb that put off heat. The bulb was close to the eggs and I had a cup of water in with them with the lid on the cooler and a cut out place for the neck of the reading lamp that clipped on. Some people have used heating pads and been able to save them. Just wondering.

I'll see if she has quit when I go back to the coop in some time. But I probably won't be able to incubate them, I don't have an incubator and I don't trust myself with projects like those, plus I don't have the spare materials necessary

I wish you lived closer my friend and I would let you borrow mine. I always have extras in case something should fail. Hopefully she was just taking a break. Good Luck.

I should've learnt my lesson from last year. Anyways, thank you so much for your kind words and offers, I hope everything goes well, I guess time will tell
