June 7 & 10 hatch date - Update

Color me in, I have them due from the 2nd to the 10th, with mystery found eggs in there somewhere. My hatch on the second are some of my precious bourbon red turkey eggs, and the tenth are guineas, and in between are my found partridge rock eggs. I know I haven't hatched this chickens eggs before because they are a significantly off color - too light, but I want to see what's produced so in they went despite not know what day they were on... LOL.

I'm due on the 7-8th with my first batch in an lg, it is super sensitive but I got it adjusted in just one day I filled it with my own barn yard specials which might be any combo of RIR buff orp or Wyandotte if they hatch I think it will be interesting to see what the cross breeds look like

One of these days I'd like to have a "mixed" pen. Right now I'm still working on my first flock with a playhouse in progress of being converted into a coop for my BBS and Buff orps. But I've been picking up all the scrap lumber I can find when I can find it. Even bought a roll of wire from a garage sale for $5. I'm hoping to get enough "free" or really cheap recyles to build a second coop for light and dark brahmas. If I'm really lucky I'll gather enough materials to build a third coop for my mixed pen. I also like the RIR, barred rocks, silver wyandottes... and so many more that I like but don't want to build a seperate pen for each. LOL... I only have about 3 or 4 acres to work with here and soon-to-be goats will be taking half of that. LOL. I'm sure my 6 kids (human kind) and dogs would like at least some of that area to be able to run and play in. lol... One of these days........

Well I'm on day 4 with my first batch. They are in the HB and temp seems to be holding very steady. I haven't had to adjust it at all. I am using the cheap thermometer that came with it and no hygrometer so we'll see what happens. But I've been turning (missed one turn yesterday). I'm keeping it pretty simple and as fuss free as possible. But so far all seems to be good. That is... I don't have any funny smells coming from the bator... no cracks in any of the eggs. I won't candle until the 27th and even then I probably won't know what to look for. But I feel good about what's going in there so far. May the hatching Gods be with me and my eggs!

My second batch in the LG has been in for 36 hours now and seems to be going well. The temp leveled out and stabilzed. I haven't noticed much flucuation. This one had a digital thermometer/hygrometer in it. The humidity is staying between 40 and 42%. (I hope that's where it needs to be). I feel good about it so far too.

Total I have 27 eggs. I figure if I can get 9 to hatch I'd have a 30% hatch rate. Being my first hatch and all being shipped eggs... I'd be happy with that. Of course... 100% hatch would be totally AWESOME. ha ha

How are you guys/gals coming along with your hatches?

Ooh, me, me! I put mine in today, and they're due June 10th.

I used an LG for years in my classroom ~ I couldn't take the fluctuations! Grrrr. Finally I splurged with my own money and bought a Genesis 1588. What a gem, so far! Temp is right on. Big clear top. I love it so far!

I'm using my LG egg turner, and this is the first time I'm hatching at home for myself! I got carried away. It has 43 eggs in it. Lt. Brahma, Americana, Giant Cochin, Cochin Frizzle, Welsummer, Black Copper Maran, Splash Maran, Birchin Maran, Old English Crele, Cochin/Americana/red banty rooster mix, and I 'think' that's it! lol. Most are shipped eggs.

I plan to candle on the 7th, although I may wait until the 10th.

I LOVE peeking into the incubator and looking at all those different kinds of eggs!

I really don't know what is mentally wrong with me

I ordered another incubator today. The brinsea sale was too good to pass up. My eggs in my LG are doing good had to adjust the temp a little yesterday due to room temp but it looks good today. I thought I might candle this weekend just for giggles

I wanted to get the Brinsea, but was too late. My Genesis is already shipped and on its way. I guess it's a decent incubator, but I'm really jealous of everyone who has the Brinseas, now.

Oh, well. Should receive my expedited Genesis in a day or two, with some luck. Then I'll set it up, HOPEFULLY get it to the right temperature quickly, and then transfer the eggs...

I had decided that I wouldn't candle until the 10th day of my first batch... It's been 7 days so I'm getting antsy. LOL...

So far all seems to be going well. I had a temp spike a couple of days ago, but I look in on the temp regularly so I don't think it was that high for very long. Only thing I'm concerned about is the humidity. It's staying between 42 and 48%. I think I read that 50% was recommended.

Ok I couldn't wait so I had to candle the first batch today (14 BBS).

8 were confirmed - saw the bulleyes move so definitely positives
4 were maybe/probably - they looked just like the other 8 only I didn't see the bullseye move
2 were maybe/not likely - I couldn't see a bulleye at all but the "mass" was same size and shape as all the others. I'm considering these as quitters but thought I'd leave them in there another day or two just in case. These were darker brown than the rest so I'm hoping it was just hard to see.

But with 8 positives out of 14... I'm pleased. I've still got a long way to go though!

I candled again last night. 11 of the first 14 have positively moving bulleyes. Yay. The other 3 have the dark mass about the same size but I couldn't see the bulleyes moving. On one I didn't see a bulleyes at all. But those 3 eggs are quite a bit darker than all the rest so I haven't culled them yet.

12 of the second 13 seem to be doing well. One is a definite "dud". These eggs have been in the incubator 3 days less than the first batch. I don't see any bulleyes and in of them, but they're not quite a week old yet so I'll hang tight for a few more days with those. I'll remove the one without the dark mass though. I don't want it to go bad and exploded all over the others.

So far its looking good. It's still early in the game but for my first time trying I'm pleased with the progress so far.

I still have a few eggs that seem to be pretty pourous... they seem to be developing pretty nicely, but I'm told pourous eggs don't hatch very well. As long as they appear to be developing I'll leave them in there and give them a shot. Has anyone had any luck with pourous eggs hatching?
