June hatch-a-long!

I'm down to one more week. I also have 2 broody hens that should be hatching around the same time so they will get the pleasure of raising the chicks that hatch in the incubator.

So, I lost the duckling in the cracked egg. It was still alive when I candled it this morning so I went ahead and sealed it up with candle wax. Well, I guess momma duck didn't like that because when I went to lock up the ducks tonight I found that she had kicked that egg out of the nest and taken off about half of the shell. The duckling probably wouldn't have made it to hatch anyway, but it was still pretty sad. Down to nine eggs. One of those I'm pretty certain won't hatch but hopefully the other eight do.

Well my mystery chick died last night. I think he was dehydrated. I feel so bad... I gave him electrolytes and he was sitting on my lap for hours on end.

He looked just like my favourite hen, Ebony. Man I'm going to make myself cry again. he was such a fun chick and I was really looking forward to seeing him grow up.

Our first chick hatched around midnight last night!!! We got the girls up to watch and it was so much fun! We have two more working their way out of their shells this morning.

This is our first hatch and I’m pretty sure we are hooked!

I'm sorry to hear that your little mystery chick didn't make it. I definitely think it's harder to lose a chick that has hatched and you've already grown attached to than it is to lose an unhatched one.

It a way, yes. You grow a special bond with it.

Last baby hatched last night!!! We have one barred rock, one silver laced Wyandotte, and one salmon favorelle

It’s 80 degrees and pretty humid outside so the little babies got to go on a field trip. They’re barely a week old but even they think it’s too hot in the sun!
