June hatch-a-long!

Now that my incubator will be freed up soon I am going to try moving her. If she abandons the eggs then I will try to hatch them in there.[/QUOTE]

My broody refused to leave her nest today. I know for a fact the oldest egg under her is 5 days old. So, I decided to try moving her tonight.

In the process of moving her and the nest I candled the eggs. All 8 seem to be viable at this time. One of the eight was cracked.

I brought it in to candle in better conditions. I found it to still be viable so I put wax over the crack. Maybe that will work.

Anyway, I have a few more days until my incubator is free. So, I decided to try something.

I have been monitoring humidity levels and such. I found that indoors, with air conditioning running humidity stays around 45% so I put the egg in an egg carton in the brooder. I put a paper towel over top to protect from chick droppings. Temps in the warmest corner are running close to the temps in the incubator.

I hope the current hatch finishes soon. Then that egg plus a few others can go in the incubator.

Back to my broody. She was very unhappy at having her nest disturbed. But, when I put the flashlight beam on the eggs she settled down again. I hope she keeps it up.

Day 7! Love their little wiggling. There were others more active than this one but it was harder to really see them. This shell is white and most of the others are closer to that light tan like a Buff Orpington's egg. I have one other viable white shelled egg, the other 2 or 3 I think weren't even fertilized. Out of 22 eggs I have 17 ones that are definitely good. The 2 I couldn't see airsacs on on day 4 or 5 now have visible airsacs and if I looked hard enough I could just make out the embryo. Those shells were the hardest to see through.

Well I think I should do an update here:

So there were 9 eggs under my broody and I candled a couple a few days ago and saw two d'Uccle egg that had the blood ring everyone dreads in hatching. I left the eggs and yesterday I candled all the eggs (Broke the rules again) and the blood rings grew so I threw out the two d'Uccle eggs.

Now there are 7 eggs. 4 SSH eggs, 2 d'Uccle eggs and one egg that mysteriously got under Jessie. All 4 SSH eggs are showing veins but one was cracked so I put some liquid skin on the crack and I hope everything goes well. 1 d'Uccle egg showed no life because I just put in under the day before and the other one I forget what it looked like.

Now the mystery egg (no idea who laid it) didn't show any life yet but I'm pretty sure it's about 2-3 days old and it's a dark egg. I'll candle it again in a few days.

I really haven't been keeping track of when the eggs were put under and when they are due to lay so I'm going to try to do that today or I'll regret it. :hmm

Jessie decided to go for a stroll the other day for about 20-30 minutes and we couldn't catch her so I hope the eggs will be fine. :fl It was extremely hot yesterday so I hope they're all okay. :jumpy

That's really cool!

I got the eggs! There’s 20 and my hen is dutifully sitting on all of them. Two are known Egyptian Fayumi eggs, two are Welsummer, three might be Langshan and the others are unknown. They’re all either 1/2 Speckled Sussex or 1/4 Buckeye, 1/4 SS. Now the waiting game begins once more!
