June hatch-a-long!

Two more chicks have just hatched, they're very tired after all that effort! One more egg is pipping and the last egg is doing nothing, it was moving well when I candled it at day 18 so hopefully it's just a bit slow!

So the day before yesterday's night I picked up Jessie and a d'Uccle egg was sticking to her feathers and dropped when she was in my arms. :hit:hit

I'm disappointed but it was only on like day 2-3 so it wasn't awful. Millie laid another egg yesterday so I put that under.

SSH egg that was cracked is doing well... I have to stop candling them and leave the poor things alone! :barnie

6 more days till the first expected hatch date! :clap

I would personally candle just before lock down and mark the air cells.

In the incubation and hatching thread there was a bit that suggested placing the eggs with the lowest top of the air cell up as it's the most likely hatching position and let's you easily see any pips. I thought that sounded like a really good idea!
Curious, why do you have to mark the egg cells? I'm hoping to hatch with an incubator next year and I still have very much to learn.

I think it has to do with keeping track of the changes. Also it helps to know which portion of the egg ought to be on top when lockdown start.

At least that is what I've read.

I read somewhere that it was good to do it because it gives you an idea of where the chick should pip and it's easier to help if you have to if you have a good idea of where the air cell is. I forgot to do it this time though!

Update on Incubator 1, I have 2 that have piped, these eggs were taken from a broody that went bad. When I found the broken egg and dead chick the eggs were a mess, had to wipe them down and put them in the incubator. So happy that so far 2 of the 5 have already started piping. IMG_1859.JPG There is still a piece of the broken egg stuck to the easter eggers egg on the right, they are both easter eggers eggs, I did not want to damage the egg to try to get it off. At least they are only a couple days off from my incubator 1 hatch that is due on the 8th.
