June Hatch A Long

Pics
Ok I just returned to my incubator from 4 hours of house building activity... I had 5 more chicks hatch and the flipped a few of the other pipping/unzipping eggs I’m a little worried about this one the partial zip was at the bottom when I pulled the chicks out, I can see a beak though...

If it's still moving there is always a chance it will make it.

The 5 chicks I have currently in the barn that are 12 days old are Chocolate Mottled. These are their parents. Totally in love with them they are so so friendly and love being with people fingers crossed I have 3 girls at least and a boy. It was a toss up for me between these guys and the blue Jubilees I actually had the Jubilees ordered and then when my friend said she would hatch me some mottled I decided to wait on them. I don't think I'll order hatchery stock again for orps these guys are so friendly it puts them to shame. View attachment 1803681It View attachment 1803682

They're beautiful!! :love Yes, have a few English Orpingtons already and I love all of them! I will say the Splash Orpingtons don't fit the breed with how vocal they are though. Both of mine have been the chattiest chickens I've ever had in my flock. Lol

They're often afraid of new snacks but next time you offer it to them they will probably be in a frenzy and chase each other around the brooder with scrambled egg bits, lol. It's the only "treat" I offer my new chicks.

It may help to tap your finger on the food and water to encourage the chicks to eat and drink, like a mother hen would do when showing them.

Also that may explain why the little chick isn't as mobile yet if it's favoring the eye. Chickens actually have crazy vision, the left eye is far sighted and the right eye is near sighted. That's why when a hawk flies over the yard they all tilt their heads in the same direction, they're looking at the hawk with their far sighted eye.

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard with the eyes! I wonder why they evolved like that. Makes me wonder if my cockatiels are the same way. They always tilt their heads to watch planes.

Venus, my silkie, is a jerk about food. She's taken up stealing EVERYONE'S treats. Every. Single. One. She's smaller than my tiniest baby, and is bullying everyone around. I have to lock her up and feed the others separately. She has issues.

Tiny Baby is recovering! :) After the water (with the smallest amount of sugar in it) he perked up. He doesn't favor one eye over the other AS much. He's still prone to wobbling though. And favoring the non wonky foot. I'm sure it's just slow development. He hopped out of the warming hut to follow the other peepers around. He's much more active, just wobbly. I'm really hoping the eye thing is just due to the stuck membrane/him being tired.

He also has a name now. We call him/her "The Claw" (Think Toy Story aliens)

Also, I think I have a rooster. He has PLENTY of room in the warming hut. He's not cold. He's not hungry. He knows where his buddies are. But he stands on top of the dang hut and chirps ALL THE TIME. Shaddup baby, your siblings are going insane. Last time I had a baby do that it was a rooster, and I've heard that's common with roosters. He's a day old and driving me insane! :p When I didn't have babies around I was wondering why the heck not. I missed them! Now that I have babies around I'm wondering why the heck I wanted them. They're loud! (I do love them, don't get me wrong)

This is a really great group. Makes me sad I am in my first week of incubating my duck eggs. But I am a duckie person.

Any one ever heard the phantom peeps from the incubator when your nearing lockdown?
But you SET in June! :clapWoohoo. I’m sure we will all still be around when your duckies are coming!

and I'm pretty sure I need one of each. :D

...at least.

@LilyD BLUE JUBILEE?

It looks like it pipped through a blood vessel. It happens sometime and it's something that is completely out of your control. This happened once in my latch hatch and it bled so much that the top of the interior egg shell was black with dried blood but it all stayed inside the egg so I didn't even know it happened until the chick hatched and was perfectly fine!

Okay was worried about them not moving as much so I opened up the eggs to help them a bit and remoistened the membranes which were white with coconut oil. Looks like they are still absorbing their yolk sac and blood vessels but I am concerned about the one on the bottom right. That chick is backwards in the egg and it was their knee I was seeing not their beak. They aren't even pipped yet. Tell me I didn't just kill it. :(

Oh no! I think there's a whole section on assisting malpositioned chicks in the assisted hatch thread. Did you read it already?
